Hi,

im looking to buy a car in Vic and it has 8 months rego left on it. I live in Sydney is there a way for me to keep the rego until it expires?

If so how?

afraid not, you will have to cash in the rego when you get a NSW one and the cash will go to the previous owner.

you sure??

Did the same thing but a Canberra car, and the cash went to me.

You are the registered owner so any monies go to the registered owner

yep, the money/cash goes to the registered owner,

if you get a RWC, and transfer the car to your name you can drive it anywhere... you will need to check, you may need a victorian address to put it in your name, then run around as long as you like on vic plates.

ok, i was assuming you wouldnt be able to transfer into your name as you are from interstate. i know if you buy without roadworthy when you cancel the reg and get new reg the remainder goes to the rpevious owner, figured interstate would be the same

You can only register in Victoria to a Victorian address. So if you have an address in Vic no probs. You need to prove your residence with a rates notice or a bill in your name at your Vic address.
You also need a RWC to accompany the transfer. The previous owner has to supply a signed transfer with the RWC, or hand in the plates if the vehicle is not being re-registered in Vic.
If the Vic reg is cancelled, the balance of un-used reg is paid to the person to whom the car was registered. i.e. the person who paid the reg in the first place.

This is the same with the Canberra car i bought.

I couldnt register it in my name as i live in NSW - BUT when i buy the car i just sign the back on the rego papers and then i have 3 weeks or something to cancell the out of state registration, the remainder is paid to new owner, and then reregister in new state.

Sorry to resurrect an old post. But I had a question about this. If a car passes rego inspection in ACT, how likely is this car to pass a blue slip in NSW, and how much does it cost for a blue slip ffor a car that does not need any repairs?
