Pick up your phone, call your usual VW bits supplier (you do have one?) and say this:

"I need some front wheel bearings fror a 197X Super Beetle"

Works for me!

You can usually repack and reinstall the old ones, too, by the way

and don't forget to use the one and only Lithium based Moly grease
Castrol and most other companies make it..
Its Blackish Grey and very sticky..
It will stop any wear on Your bearings...
I think Castrol call theirs LMM grease...

Don't use clay or soap based green greases..

and as someone else said, You can clean and repack the old bearings, especially if they PO used Lithium based Moly grease.

The reason I asked is I can source bearings through work at the "right" price and was hoping someone had the details. ie 620blah blah etc.

Hi Allan,
I hope these are correct...
The bearing numbers I have are:

L45449 - L45410 Cone and Cup - Outer Bearing
LM11749 - LM11710 Cone and Cup - Inner Bearing

The Seal Number is PR 6302 [PBR] or
C6302 [CBC Bearings]

I believe these to be the correct Ones for 68 & 69 Front wheels with Disc Brakes...

I believe the 1971-72 beariings should be the same...

The LM11749-LM11710 are fairly common tapered roller front wheel bearings..
I think the L45449-L45410 aren't so common...

Sorry, I don't have the size of the seal for You...
For some reason, I Never wrote it down...
and I have IRS rear wheel bearing seals on hand, but no front seals.... so I can't measure them either...

cheers

Lee Noonan

Hi Allan,
I just checked with My Son who showed Me the boxes the bearings came in, when He replaced them on His 1969
Beetle...

He told Me someone told Him that they had found that the bearings in both front wheels of their beetle's disc brake front axles were different..??

So, We have another set of Bearing numbers....

L68149- L68110 Tapered Cone and Cup
LM12749- LM12710 Tapered Cone & Cup

Sorry about that Allan....

Beetles are probably not listed in Bearing suppliers books
these days....

Anyone else know what bearings are in a 1971 Beetle's Disc Brake front axle...

No good looking at CIP1 etc as Beetles in the USA only had drum brakes...

Good that You saw that.... Allan

I'd hate for You to get the incorrect ones...

If I ever need to replace My F/W bearings ...
it looks like I may have to wait...
and check them out...

I aways thought the book numbers I had written down were correct...

Hi Allan,
it gets worse...
just found the front axle seal is 111 405 641A >68

then front seal 36 x 52 x 5 mm I hope is Yours...

outer bearing suits all beetles with discs and all type 3s
311 405 645 vw part number

inner bearing suits type 3 + 67 1300 + 1968 beetle with disc brakes... 311 405 625 vw part number

inner bearing suits Beetle 1968 on with disc brakes
311 405 625E vw part number

Maybe You can make something out of that -
maybe cross reference to a bearing...
or bearings... very confusing...
