Hey guys,

Just got myself a 58 to create a baja today! (Thanx again karmen [bernie] for it and dropping off aswell)

Was driving it around the sarvo only around the front yard though so cud only get into 2nd. However it really dosent like going from 2nd back into to 1st. Makes a terrible crunching sound. Anyone know whats going on here??

Cheers

Only first gear is non synchro on that model, 2 to 4 are synchroed.

yeh... BC is a little bit the same.. doesnt crunch, just is a bit slow to get in.

Extending a bit on double clutching, once you start driving on the road with the bug, to save the syncro's, it's still a good idea to double clutch (even tho I dont 🤓), and perhaps master the art of "rev matching", for smoother changes.

Basically, double clutching entails using the clutch then kicking the car out of gear, letting the clutch out then in again and shifting down into the lower gear. When rev-matching, you to blip the throttle a little in nuetral to get the engine and gearbox spinning so to speak at close to the same speed before shiftiing up or down a gear.

This makes things a helavalot easier for your synchros and makes ya changes nice and smooth.😎

Hi,
When the 58 beetle was made, and other models without 1st gear synchro... >1961 model.

You were told to only use 1st gear when the car is completly stopped...

If the car had slowed down and You had to change down
always go into 2nd gear...
[I still do this!!]

Most people don't know how to double shuffle, and its been so long since I did one...
not sure i can still do it...

Double shuffling, I read somewhere years ago, isn't good for synchro rings...
its only supposed to be used when there isn't any synchro rings on the gear You are selecting...

Maybe someone can tell Us why this is so...??
[thats probably why I haven;t used a double shuffle for many years...]
or why it isn't so..??

cheers

Double clutching is good for the syncro rings cos it takes the load off them... they are there to match the gears up as you pass through neutral, so that the driver doesnt have to, when you double clutch you are matching the gears manually... (ie. popping one gear out, releasing it, and popping the next gear in) thus giving the syncro rings a lil rest hehehe

Personally i learned to drive in a 1949 MG TC, and i used to race my dads MGB for fun... as a result its become normal for me to double clutch, rev-match, and use heel-and-toe so i can do it all under brakes. I don't know how many times i've had my friends ask why i used the brake and the accelerator at the same time hahahaha

double clutching is an important thing to learn, especially without syncro...i have a 58 with a syncro'd first gear...some nice person decided to install it or maybe it is a newer gearbox...might want to look at that for a baja.

Hehehe... heel and toe is going a bit out of my league I think hehehe... I dont hav that kinda coordination! 😂

You are bringing back memories now...
I used to do those sort of things years ago...

I thought it was normal then, to be able to heel and toe
but haven't done it for a long time...
I used to practice the scandanavian flick on a corner [dirt road] on the way to work in a Galant Rally car I had...
the good ole days...

is also the only way to change gears without using the clutch at all if you dont wanna crunch gears.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

practising rev matching will be time well spent when you snap a clutch cable in peak hour traffic ;-)

Only way i could see double clutching (take out of gear, put in neutral, release clutch, blip throttle, shift to next gear) is the wear on the syncro is opposite to that if you are not double clutching.

for example; shifting down using double clutch, normally the syncro wud try and speed up the shaft, but if you spin the shaft (blip in neutral) the syncro will try and slow the shaft so the gears can mesh.

i find it rare that i do have to shift into first whilst still moving anyway
double clutching is pieceapiss to learn my first bug had a dodgy 2nd gear syncro so now i do it out of habit in every car i drive with out realising
to many snapped clutch cables/ blown slave cylinders and broken clutch forks forced me to take up clutchless gear changes LOL

only if you blip too much... you're trying to match remember, not rev it out the other way 😉

True dat! That saved my bacon a couple times. It's also useful to know where in the rev range (quite low) it will allow you to "speed shift" (change gears without the clutch, or if you use the clutch, after you change up, you can drop the clutch with no finesse but the change will be smooth because the engine speed is the same as the gearbox speed - hope that makes sense).

I usually double clutch to save my syncros too... and it's smoother like the other's have mentioned. It's wuite easy when you have a roller pedal too! hehe
