Hey All,

Have 1k to spend on a handheld video camera.

Must have good function, not too interested in mega options on camera.

Prefer straight to dvd or hard disk.

want smaller unit

dont have to spend all dosh, may want to get a few extras ie batteries.

To be used for film of the kiddies to send to Grandparents, car rides, general usage. Would like it to maybe take stills.

What are other ppl experience/advise

thanks

kkk

I work in commercial TV and we use Sony handycam's as a back up for our professional gear. They're remarkably easy to use, light and you can get tapes and bits for them anywhere in the world. They'res plenty of 2nd hand ones floating around too if you want to save a bit of cash.
In the worlds before Monkey primal chaos reigned. heaven sought order, but he pheonix can fly only when its feathers are grown. the 4 worlds formed again and yet again, as the endless aoens weild and passed. Time and the pure essence of heaven and the moisture of the earth all worked upon a certain rock old as creation. And it became mgically fertile. That first egg was named "Thought". Thathaga Buddha, the father Buddha, said with our thoughts we make the world. Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch and from it came a stone monkey! The nature of MONKEY WAS IREPRESSIBLE!!!!! !

Can say I have had a Sony MiniDV and onyl had one problem with it in almost six years. The camera has been around the world a few times and treated not so nicely by all who have used it. Dust in Iraq and bounced about a hell of a lot in Bosnia (not to mention backpacking through Europe as well).
Good resolution and easy to get tapes and memory sticks for.
They are good to get new or second hand (from friends comments) so agree with soft notch 👍 Sony

They are all of a similar quality now. Make sure you get mini DV format, this will make editing the footage easier and the results better. The camera can be connected to computer by firewire to import your footage for editing. Both Windows and OS X have movie making sowtware included these days, so any one can be a budding Scorses or Spielberg.

I have two mini DV camers, one small one for quick stuff, and a high end canon for serious stuff. I contemplated getting a hdd jvc camera when they first came out, but my friends experience changed my mind very quickly. It would seem it is no easier to import the footage to computer from a hdd camera than a dv tape one. The JVC HDD ones (everio) require proprietary JVC software, which my based on my friends experience is buggy. My biggest beef with the whole process is importing the DV footage into a computer for editing. It is slow going, if you shoot 1 hour of tape, it will take 1hour to import it. The whole hdd concept was supposed to revolutionise this, just mount the camera to your computer like an external hdd and drag the DV file to your preferred directory and edit at will, unfortunately it doesnt seem to work like that. The hdd recorders dont have the capacity of a DV tape camera either, unles you regularly empty the hdd, you may find yourself with a full hdd and unable to record. Mini DV tapes are cheap, you can get them almost anywhere, so if by chance you forget to empty your tape of the last shoot, just buy another, simple. I am no expert, so this is just my perspective as a novice. If there are any professionals out there, perhaps you can share your experience with us.
