Just wondering if anyone here has converted an alternator from another car to fit a Type III. And is so what they needed to do. I know I am going to need more than 30A and was hoping to get something around 75. From memory I have heard in the States of people using late model Honda or RX7 alternators.

There is a thread on this..... try a search...

The truth is important. It will set you free
There is a company called the DDB in the states which offer a conversion kit. It includes a new alternator (75 or 90A) with integral regulator, belt, pulley, hold down strap and detailed installation instructions. They retail for around US$250, depending on which alternator you want. They have offered me a 15% discount for a group buy. As well as this there are probably shipping savings to be had.
So, anybody who is interested in an alternaor for a type 3, let me know. If there is enough interest I will try to put together a group buy
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
Thanks, I had spent quite some time searching for Type three alternator conversion but came up with nothing, and just searching for alternator gives a huge number of hits.
I think I saw something about DDB when looking through the Samba site. I am actually going down to the wreckers in the morining and start searching for something that could possibly fit.

LOL I found the other thread about Type 3 alternators. So yeah while thae search didnt work going through the pages manualy did. Anyway back to the topic. I belive that the Type 1 alternator is much larger at the front end. I don't know if the shaft for the fan in the back would foul on anything either (Im still new to all this and havent seen the Type1 gen or alternator out of the car) I am sure that there has to be something simple to adapt out there. I am not too happy about grinding the case of a replacement. I mean where does all the grinding dust go? Surly some must end up in the bearings reducing life. I should have this Sunday to get to the auto recycler and start having a good look. Surly I can find something the right diameter case and long enough to line up in the right places.

Hey Electricmonk how are you going with this?
I am also doing this conversion on my type 3.
Cheers, Toby 👍

Took a look down at the local pick a part today. No luck so far. I made the mistake of taking my step son with me. From the minute we got there he was asking how long we would be and then wouldn't help carry anything. I still had a look at twenty or so cars. Did I measure wrong as I had the diameter of the gen in my vw as being around 35cm diameter? Everything I found was about 44cm. I did have a moment when I thought I had found one on a merc but the other end was huge. And what the hell is up with SAAB's, the motor is in backwards don't they read the damm instructions when they put them together
