I just bought on friday a set of 54 headlights with 9 & 12 surround in mint condition that have mesh covers. These are a little different as the mesh isn't clipped in, it is on a hinge and they flip up so you can clean the glass. Sorry I dont want to sell though. I will ask who I got the from if they have any more. He mentioned that they are $100 p set.

these are really hard to get. the hinged ones are after market ones and are usually chromed steel and tend to rust plus they have to be fixed to headlight chrome ring (con) but makes them hard to steal (pro) the genuine ones have a stamp on the side and are stainless (pro) but are held in by a clip at the top and the bottom headlight screw and can be removed by lowlife thieves (con) good luck on finding a set under $200. ciao

So you have seen the flip up ones before. I have never seen them only the non fixed kind, are they common. I will post a pic.
They have no rust at all and I thought they were stainless. What is stamped on the side of them?

has the letters vw on top of each other in a little circle. yours may be stainless as it depends on the maker.

I have the hinged ones on my 54. They are stainless steel and don't look like aftermarket, well not recent aftermarket!

Dunno Karmen... I think the wire mesh type would be tough to make actually.... Spot welding that would be a drag... I think the 'jailbar' style ones would be a load EZR.... But it would take a bit of work to make a buck.... Once thats done, pressing the rod would be EZR... If a little fiddly.... Be nice to make out of stainless, but again... I hear stainless is hard to work with.... More than likely they could be made from 4mm rod, pressed to shape, the brased together over the buck.... Can you say labour intensive!.... Not something I'd want to make a living from thats for sure...
