Hi Guys,

Can anyway help me out with some advice on what the potential problem could be. The Gen light doesn't come on when the car is running, however when I turn the lights on at night, it comes on and flashes, albeit only dull.

If I turn the car offf and leave the lights on, they automatically go off.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Marty

What king of bug have you got? I've seen this on a super beetle recently.

Turns out someone had the odometer out recently and forgot to hook up some of the brown ground wires.
There should be 3 or 4 brown wires that all hook onto the body of the odometer, check em.

depending on what wattage the headlight bulbs are if its only a real dull glow thats fairly normal on an old vw electrical system (worn down genny brushes dopey regulator etc)

on all 71 onwards bugs and probably kombis the headlights go out when u turn the ignition off and only the parkers stay on
the headlights also go out intentionally in the start position too to help with starter motor voltage

Thanks Guys.

Its a 75 model. I never knew the lights go out intentionally, so that problem solved. I'm taking the dash out today to get re-skimmed so I'll check out the brown wires. I've also got a regulator on order at Volkspower. Thanks for your feedback, I'll let you know how I go.

Cheers,

Marty
