what's the difference between an "average" builder and a great builder ? it seems that few ppl have the reputation of being great builders but "almost anyone can build a vw engine"what makes a great builder great
its just a car for f*%k sake

Someone who will give you the written, itemised BILL with a written waranty and who has a proven success in his/her field. These same people that stand behind the product they are selling with aftersales service are GREAT builders. Anyone can build a good to average VW engine but with a great/professional engine builder you get a product that lasts. You pay for the quality of their work.

All those responses sound like an answer to:
"What is a good business person?"
I would call a good engine builder one who
Checks and adjusts as required, all specifications at assembly time, in the cleanest conditions possible,
all the while, not taking short cuts to satisfy a budget.

I may edit that later to be a little more clear.

I would have classed that as quality of work....

Yes, and that is what I believe "makes a great builder great".

Just my opinion.

Poor business practises are another issue,
as are greedy people who charge out more hours than it takes.

Perhaps newoldmanx can clarify which answer he is after.

actually i think both qualify as my thoughts initially were high attention to detail ie hardware combinations ,clearances, measuring tollerances clean environment quality tools proper attention to torque settings right sealants lubricants etc
but i think also improtant is provider/customer relations before and after build ie understanding customers needs/goals and realistic information to achieve these needs/goals itimised quote proper prportion of hours detailed running in instructions and backup service
it may sound like alot but imho this is what seperates good builders from great builders:thumb

All of the points above are totally relivent.

Do your home work and ask them for there results in this field.

What cars have they build engines for be it road or track. Ask them if they mind if you can talk to these people for a reference.

If they are really good there will be products out there to speak about. Actions speek loader than words.

Wish you luck with your hunt.

And can talk your ear off for at least an hour minimum.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

My advise, get your specs of your motor first before handing over the last of the money (payments made on time every time), my experience is that after more than 12 mths after being built & 12 mths in the making (1776) still waiting for specs on the motor & this was from a reputable specalist vw builder, not real happy with my experience, pick your builder well & get references from his previous clients

A lot to be said for experience. There is some value in "Horses for Corses".You can build a high hp stroker, but will it last?
If someone is still building top shelf engines after 20 years (and some are still going)why look any further?
Have they done any Race and Developement?Do they balance every engine?Do they counter weight the cranks themselves?
I could go on.
But ring Him and he'll tell ya!
