I was driving my 36hp on the F3 a few weeks ago. I was slipstreaming a truck doing 65mph. Everything was going fine down the Brooklyn hill heading north. As I was pulling up the second rise towards the first speed camera, I had my foot to the floor, with the car doing about 50mph. The car was under some load and it's the steepest part of a long climb. The car stuttered a little, gave a misfire pop, so I lifted a little and let the car torque the rest of the way up. The rest of the way home (relatively flat) it coughed and farted a little. Once we got off the F3 it pulled ok from low revs, and it was only when I was pulling up a hill with the car on load that it did it again....this time in second gear.
So nexg morning I checked the points gap and plugs and it seemed fine. Started it up and went for a little run and it was ok. As I was pulling up a third gear hill I put my foot nearly flat, and it did it again.
For the next few days I kept to 60mph on the F3, and didn't floor it as much up the hills - more or less let the car torque its way up. After doing this for a week, the car hasn't done it again and seems back to normal - nearly to the point of hitting 65mph and able to lean on it a bit going up hills.
So.....what happened here?
- Did I flood it under load?
- Did the timing retard itself, and then work itself back? (I've spoken to someone re timing and they reckon it could be something with the vacuum advance)
- Was I just putting a little bit of strain on the old boy and he was telling me to ease off a bit?
What do you think??
Try taking your plug leads off the plugs, twisting the insulator jobbies on the ends of the wires clockwise (they are held into the core of the wire with a screwthread, and thsi tightens them up) and replacing them.
Old trick - often works... ask me to tell you a story on Sat about it... :thumb

maybe, lack of fuel under full throttle, check fuel filter & also maybe blow back through fuel line in case reserve tap is a bit clogged
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54
I agree with Kim,
Sounds like running out of fuel, fuel filter, or even the fuel pump not quiet keeping up under full throttle.

Thanks to the brains trust for that. I'll have a look.
if theres not enough fuel, wouldn't it run lean, and then rev off its head?
I'm an amatuer though, so i wouldn't know betta
would it explain the misfire pop?

Hi Squizy,
Possible overheating causing detonation? Do you have a temp gauge?
My old type 3 did the same thing once in the same spot on the F3!
I pulled over and let it cool and it was fine after that.
A beetle I was driving in the same spot did the same thing too! Except I was limping it home with a sunken valve and it was not happy.
That hill is a killer in a low HP volksy eh!? So is the one just after Brooklyn bridge...
If your timing and jetting is out then watch the head temps soar!
I hope it won't happen to you again.
Cheers, Toby :thumb
