Ok chaps...
What do you reckon...do I get the old Solex 34 Pict carb redone or just sod it and go and get a new one.
More importantly...where do you reckon I could get a brand new Pict 34 from?
Its a 1971 VW Superbug FYI...
Ive had it tuned to buggery and it still backfires and runs like a git on the low gears round corners...everything else is sweet so I know its just the carb.
new carbs are like $300-ish Maybe more. AC Net is selling for $200 US + +
I would borrow another one and try that first. See if it does make a difference

Apparently you cant get NEW 34's anymore. only 30's
A pict 30 with adapter will work fine on a stock
I may have a 30 Pict if you want to try that
Futue te ipsum!!!
Well...mechanics been over the whole thing...it runs sweet now...except when its in 2nd and changing down...backfires premature stalling etc etc etc.
Beforehand the carb was throttled up so it would run well over the rev's and still backfire.
He gave me the choice either to overhaul the one I have on there at the moment...or get a new one.
I have seen Pcit 34 for sale and its in the US at a nasty 249 USD...I dont mind spending the cash if it makes the motor sweet...cos its a VW right...but just getting opinion before I do.
Im no mechanic btw...used to overhaul Landies but thats about it...these are a different kettle of fish.
Just tryng to cover all my bases here before I burn some more bucks.
worth it though isnt it.... :thumb
if its not a daily and you can get by without it for a few days, get a carb kit and pull it apart and then take the base to get the fly shaft rebushed and rebuild it yourself.VERY important to get the flyshaft done, after that its easy ,if you can do a landy you can do this, new solex 34's are available in the us for $200, BTW check inside the venturi where the fly closes for a ridge ,if its there its spare parts:beer:beer:beer
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
backfire is usually an exhaust leak, not a carb problem
Pay your debts, CxxT
Hi Mate....
hmm...exhaust....hadnt thought of that to be honest , must admit I was going along the carb route as the backfires are few and far between and usually on the rundown on the engine with no accelerator..when the engine is warm.
The whole underside was checked out this week and no probs were evident in that area..will see what happens when the old carb has a medical I suppose.
Thanks again though , all appreaciated.
Cheers

One of the causes of backfiring can be a small leak in the inlet manifold between the carby and the valves. Check for leaks at the bottom of the carby, the rubber joins in the inlet manifold and the fit to the heads. I'd remove the manifold and replace and goo all of the gaskets, before I spent $$$$ on a carby.
Hi Chaps,
Thanks for all your answers to my quandry, both on here and in U2U form.
Im a relative 'newb' when it comes to all this lark on these things so its great to have a bit more of experienced voices give me some pointers.
Going to admit temporary defeat in getting a new one and check everything that has been mentioned here as well as pull the old carb to pieces and see what the hell is up with that...when its not raining down here hopefully..
So I reckon about another month at the going rate :thumb
Anyways...thanks again for your help on this one all appreaciated...will let you know how I get on.
Cheers
No leaks anywhere..checked it this weekend...
But...on the downside theres more backfires than a bloke on a baked bean diet...only small pops though this time.
I have to drive the thing like Ive stolen it to avoid it from popping out....sounds likes theres a "drive by" going on if its being driven normally..hehehe :duh
ah well...carb doctor is the next place for this little puppy.
when was the last time the valves were done??
Futue te ipsum!!!
Hi Mate....
Welll the thing itself is a complete rebuild....so to be honest Im not really sure...it was overhauled at the mechanics a few weeks ago...and he does tell me its the carb straight out thats due for a workover.
He's a good chap and doesnt do carb work himself so theres no angle hes working on to get some extra dollars out of me.
Thats why Ive really assumed from the outset its the carb thats kaput...he does reccommend though not to bother getting a new one but get this one checked out first and go from there.
I just went down the path of least resistance I guess.
I am a relative newb though as far as these engines are concerned.....last one was a Land Rover Defender 90 and bugger all went wrong with that...even though I took it to hell and back.
Misdiagnosis can be costly though. What will you say if there is no significant improvement and it still pos after you fit the new carby?
Our 71 super popped until I put a new exhaust and tailpipes on it.
Our 1800 bus was always idling poorly until the baseplate in the distributor was replaced.
My EH Holden was idling erattically until I put new new sparkplug leads in it. The ones in it had only done 5000km.
Cheaper to get a second hand or borrow a carby that definitley works well.
idling is fine...couldnt be better , and also no worries starting up first time as well.
I was (before I came here) just going to say sod it and go and get a new one...but thanks to all you chaps advise Ive been crossing off the list the things it may well be.
Now buying a new one is a last resort (trust me)
Thanks for all your understanding and help.
Will keep you posted :thumb
