tranny scraping noise

am sorry if this has been posted and/or answered before, I did try searching but drew blanks

I keep hearing a scratching-like noise when the car is in neutral and clutch pedal up. pushing down the clutch pedal takes the noise away. When in gear (both with pedal up and down), there is no noise.

Anybody know what the cause may be?

Engine is 1300, car is '66 beetle (converted to 12v by PO)

a few of my beetles do that when theyre cold
soon as it all warms up it stops
i think its just one of the main bearings giving that clutch in stops it
