with Fuel prices the way they are does anyone know why the golf ecomatic wasnt a hit?

for those with no idea what im talking about in the early 90s vw built a diesel golf that would stop running as soon as u took ur foot off the accellorater and restart when u put ur foot down again
it averaged 4.4L/100km and was even better in city/stop go traffic
in the UK they were only $1000 dearer than a standard golf.
only about 2000 were sold and its got me stuffed why they werent successfull
they were 5speed semi auto and drove exactly like a normal golf

I owned a ecomatic mk3 was an english import lives in dubbo now..converted it to std manual and got rid of the semiauto clutch assy....the biggest prob with these models was the electrics as the starters used to eat the ring gear of the flywheel every couple months..electric power steer was great though.. cheers steve

brendan, its got me stuffed whats happend to that video when i last saw it a few years ago it was starting to get a bit 2nd hand which its entitled to at about 12 years of age LOL

steve, i wondered how the starter and flywheel would hold up considering how oftne it would be operating, u'd have to stay on top of the maintainace, specially once they get a few Kms under the belt
