I had to replace the shoe hold down springs recently as the old ones fell off and had a good time spinning around and getting stuck in places. There was another piece of metal loose as well. In the bentley manual, it shows this piece clipped around the top return spring and the connecting link. The brake hardware kit doesn't include this spring clip. The brakes seem to be fine without it. Does anyone know what its for, and if its ok to have it missing.
Its a 66 bug
Thanks
do you have a pic of the item your talking about ??
They hold the shoes in place, especially when you are pulling the drum off

Here are 2 pics of what I'm talking about. The red arrows point to the clip.
The return springs and hold down springs are definitey on!!
.
Maybe it just stops the plate from rattling and making a noise ???
the clip doesn't look like its that important, as its made from thin spring steel [from memory]
and it just clips over the spring, which can break too...
so it could just be an Anti Rattle Clip...

Sorry, I thought you meant the retaining springs!
Don't worry about that other bit; it just makes it easier to assemble
