Hi all,
I have a few questions about my 1200 single port heads.
I am rebuilding the engine to familiarize myself with a vw engine. I am wondering what the evaluation of my heads would be, i.e. condition, etc.
The heads and the piston is really caked with carbon (black) cylinders 2,3 and 4 look ok i think but cylinder 1 has alot of caked oil around it.
I am going to strip it right down and do the rings and check out the bottom end, this will evetually be my backup engine, when i go big engine.
Cheers Matt.

The heads have been leaking at the barrel seating surface as you can see the carbon and blowby.
The carbon in the chambers and on top of the pistons can just be cleaned off.
Now pull the Valve springs off and have check the wear in the valve guides. If your unsure how it should be just take them into a good mechanic or machining shop with the vaves and get them to give them a wiggle. Exhaust guides are probably worn out.
At the very least the heads need a skim and if the seats and guides are ok give them a good clean up and lap them back in.

You need to carefully measure your installed cylinder heights.
Iit looks to me as if your cylinders are at quite different heights and the heads have not sat squarely and cleanly down against the barrel tops.
Since there are no gaskets to take up any difference in heights, the heads sits out of square with the barrels and leak.
Id say that was a very dodgey rebuild to end up with that shithouse result.
As owenMM mentioned, both the heads should be lightly skimmed to restore the sealing face and the barrels will need to be shimmed to correct heights.
Its also wise to lightly lap the cylinders to the heads with some valve grinding paste to ensure good sealing face contact.

Im not a complete idiot, quite a few parts are missing....
yer agreed as said above, that was a real backyard dodgy rebuilt previously.
to end up with the head not square on the barrel must have been obvious when the car was running too, id imagine it would be popping like an exhaust manifold hole or simular
get the heads reconditioned for sure. measure to make sure there is the same gap at the barrels this time

Or the engine has never had a head retorque OR the head bolts/studs have been snapped or stripped out of the case
But the amount of 'leaked' oil/muck, it looks too bad for any of that
whatever, that was a very SAD engine!

Pay your debts, CxxT
Hi guys,
thanks for the info. I should probably state that this is the first time that i have ever pulled down the motor. It has been sitting for near 4 years now. I was given the car (which i am rebuilding) about 4 years ago and now i have finally made it to the engine.
As I said this will eventually end up being my backup engine after i get some 'bread' together to go bigger and more powerful, but to start with i just need to learn my way around the engine etc.
The engine may have been rebuilt before it was given to me, but i am not sure. it was running when i got it, and i can remember starting it up a few times, but the muffler was really stuffed so it was hard to hear anything in particular over it.
thanks for all the help so far, hopefully i will be able to give the motor a freshen up. because funds are tight i am going to trbo this engineand sort it all out, then i will be able to keep the exhaust manifold and turbo setup (except the carbi) when i go up to a wild 1600tp.
cheers,
matt.
