I've just recently bought an oval beetle. I've only ever had splitty kombis and am not sure about the brakes on the oval. The splitty's original brakes were always kind of dodgy no matter what I replaced, tweaked etc. and I'm wondering if the beetles are the same. I thought they should have been better considering the difference in the car's weight.
All the brakes are adjusted up correctly and the peddle shows good pressure. I'd just like to know how good they should be.
I can get them to lock up at the front only if I hit them quick. If I brake then apply more pressure as I go, no lock up.
Thanks.
Split nut,
Brake lockup is a bad thing, it increases your stopping distance.
When everything is within spec, a beetle stops pretty well.
Cheers
take the drums to get machined, and get the shoes relined. So many cars getting around with 20-30 yr old brake shoes and worn drums.
this will make a big difference. Can check all the wheel cyl at the same time.
Replace the flexiable rubber lines as well
Thanks guys. When I buy a car, I usually spend as much as is required to redo all of the brakes. I think I'll be doing that again. I just wanted to get someone else's opinion on their general effectiveness before shelling out more dough.
I know brake lock up is a bad thing when driving, but I reckon they should lock up when if pressed hard enough for testing purposes.
Yep i would want them to lock up other wise they AINT working
have you replaced your brake fluid, must do every 2 years
