My 13 y.o brother has been pretty sick since Thursday... my Mum thought it was gastro but only the vomity side of it, so didn't take him to dr's. He's had real bad stomach pains and still had them last night, so bad that he couldn't even stand up. Mum decided it could be something else (he has congenital hydrocephalus - look it up on Google if curious) so she and step-dad whisked him off to The Angliss emergency, where after dosing him up on painkillers he was promptly transferred by ambulance to the Royal Childrens hospital. After x-rays and ct-scans it's decided he needs to be opened up and looked at.
Well... the verdict is that his apendix was inflamed so much it had ruptured and was actually hanging down inside his pelvic area. The end of his shunt tube was sitting in a massive amount of pus and may need to be flushed, and his bladder and intestines are also infected badly and covered in pus (lovely images so far? :P)... no wonder he had a sore stomach and was vomiting!
The doctors and neurosurgeons worked on him for 3 hours this afternoon and REALLY had to clean everything inside him up. He's been on morphine since last night, plus who knows how many antibiotics now and there's a chance infections can return, etc. He won't be home for atleast a week.🙁
And the last couple of days all my little bro has said was that his 'stomach was pretty sore but he'll be fine'. Talk about not wanting to make a fuss, and look at the result! He's being very brave at the hospital, and is pretty lucky too.
So... who else here has a high tolerance to pain? 😉
me.. when on morphine. I love that stuff.
but seriously, he is pretty tough! hope he recovers all good.
pretty blue bug...
hope your borther recovers quickly. scary to think such high tolerence can cause such problems.
i know i have (i was in labour for ages apparently before i even noticed it...lol) and my son. When he was born, he had a broken shoulder, but didnt cry once. it was only two weeks later, at first check up, that anyone noticed a lump, where the bone was healing ti self. xrays later revealed he had broken it. ouch!. he ahs also hurt his foot, torn it right open...and only when someone pointed out he was bleeding did he cry....so we learnt hard way too.
now, if he has a big hit to his body, and we notice lump etc...we just take him to the dr, because he won't actually complain about it.
his sisters are the same. eldest just got a tattoo...and only after they were half way thru did she realise they had even started 🤪 youngest daughter loves to watch as she gets needles...because she does really notice. weird family...veyr weird.
but again, hop eyour brother recovers ok, and get home quickly so he can begin to annoy you (as brothers do) like normal.
dubless. 🥲
🥷 And who the helled parked the Mitsubishi "Prancer" under my house??? 🥷
I think most of my family has a high tolerance too. I've got masses of scar tissue from machete's and motorbikes mostly, especially on my knees. I've dislocated my right knee twice in three months...didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, i just couldn't put weight on it...:o
My brother has almost as much scar tissue as me. He's fallen out of a tree house 2 stories onto some rocks, got up and said "ow." He's had his nose broken by a cricket bat (I wasn't trying to hit him), been run over by a four wheeler (again I didn't try to run over him) , had four broken arms and a torn ligament in the wrist. The fourth time he broke his arm my Mum didn't believe him and waited a week to take him to the Dr's.
My Dad has dislocated his shoulder multiple times, had a angle grinder disc explode and rip a hole roughly from ankle to knee. He stuffed a sock in it, walked down the hill to the house and got driven 45 min to the hospital. The surgeon had a trainee who first had five goes to put a needle in his arm (my dad's got big visible viens) then spent five minutes checking and rechecking that was definitely no bits of disc in his leg. and so on...
He's also had three cracked ribs when a cow slammed him into the side of the cattle yards and he didn't even slow down at all or take a day off.
My uncle when he was little fell off the shed roof and ended up with bones sticking all the way out of both wrists. and so on...
It's a family tradition...:P
THe MC Bat Commander's motto: "Never do now, what you could do for 24 hours straight, all night, the night before."
Thanx for the well wishes, I'll pass them on to him. He'll love it 'cos it'll make him fell famous. :P
My mum and stepdad just got home from the Children's. My little bro's appendix had come off completely when it burst and was sitting right down in the pelvis cavity, hence why nothing showed up on the x-ray where they were expecting it to be. He had 3.5 hour keyhole surgery where they were able to remove it and clean all the absesces and pus. His shunt has been externalised too through a hole in his neck, as they can't put it back in until all the infections go away. The next 2-3 days will tell if the antibiotics are working, and hopefully in a week he can have the shunt internalised normally, and another couple of days and he'll come home. He was also mega dehydrated and has 2 drips in his arm.
I'm going in to see him tomorrow after work. Poor little bugger when he got to the hospital was saying he hoped it wasn't cancer, as he loves watching the Medical Emergency show on telly and the 13 y.o boy on there had the cnacer in his leg. 🙁
Anyway, my bro still has a little way to go as he's very sick, so any healing thoughts for him are much appreciated by all! :kiss
peritonitis is not a nice thing (usually a complication of a ruptured appendix) so i wish him a speedy recovery, and he must be one tough lad:thumb

as far as pain goes i had a caeaerean 2 yrs ago when my twins were born and the drs were astounded that after i got feeling back in my legs i was walking around ,i refused the wheelchair as i didn,t want to delay my recovery and i din,t want to wait for one to see my girls in the icu
but I self inflict alot of pain on myself ie 4tattoos 5piercings, 9 including ears , and numerous scars from self harm people have differnt tolerances to pain
your little bro is a very brave boy
Yep, that's what he has... pretty badly too. 🙁
Best wishes to him and your family for a speedy recovery.
On the other side ...one TOUGH hombre! Don't tell the army.
A POSSE AD ESSE.
I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.
:P
ouch, I'm glad the infection sounds as if it's stabilised. Not good news if you get septic from that pus... wish the little soldier all the best and to keep watching those RPA shows!
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
Hope he recovers well,
hospital is a boring place after a few weeks at my age, so it must be really dull at his age. Tell him he is famous 🙂 all the AVD'rs are reading about him and his 'adventures'.
'Ah, whatever................'
I just got back from seeing my little bro tonight.
He's really out of it and has painkillers (morphine) every 5 minutes or so. He's still in a lot of pain and is super tired. 🙁
I made him a 'Bounce Back Soon!' balloon bouquet (gotta love my work!) which thankfully brought a rare smile to his face, along with a cute little tiger soft toy 'cos he's being as brave and strong as a tiger. Tomorrow should see him trying to move about a bit, but he still has more surgery to come. The nurses looking after him are doing a great job and have said he's doing as he should.
He was chuffed when I told him the AVD-ers had been wishing him well! :P
Half way through reading the first post about this tough little boy, I thought of peritonitis, which is agonising and very dangerous. I'm pleased to read that he is better. I hope that the next time he feels some serious pain that he does something about it. Pain is a message that something is wrong. I hope that he's learned that. Regardless of that, please tell him that I'm impressed by his obvious toughness.
👍 to him. I have had my times in hospital and I have to say 👍 to the nurses. Definitley a high concentration of people committed to their work.
Was told by the doctors last night (my Mum called them when we got home after seeing my bro) that his appendix had actually burst on the Thursday night, which is when he started vomiting. The appendix then came away and fell into his pelvic cavity on the Saturday which is when he was on the floor and couldn't stand up. That also explains the bad infection and copious amount of pus covering his insides when they opened him up to have a look and clean it up. 🙁
So he went 3 days not complaining AFTER the thing had burst! Makes me wonder if he did have a sore stomach leading up to it bursting, as surely it would have been inflamed like hell? :duh
Definitely one tough little dude (although slightly dumb for not saying he was really sore!) :P
OH NO !!!!!!!!!
Glad to hear that your brother is ok ! A ruptured appendix is not at all a nice thing to have, trust me, have been there and done that.
Don't worry Laura, he will be fine, the Childrens is a great hospital and with the powerful antibiotics of today he will bounce back in no time
Word of warning ...... when they let him eat again, tell him to aviod orange juice at all costs ..... doesn't look the best in reverse !!!!
🤘
Why orange juice?
