Good to see some topics closed like this and surely the poster will have learned something from it. Leave a paper trail if an order is manual either by post or Fax. That way there is no comeback either way. Better if it's electronic such as e-mail as there is always evidence of what was ordered. If it's by fax, it's a good idea to call the company once it's sent to ensure that it was received and they understand what is required. Believe me! Working for the government all these years I know why this is important and we have always been advised not to do things by phone only. ALWAYS e-mail as well so there is recorded evidence of everything............................ STUDENTS ON HERE TAKE NOTE!!!

Sometimes a better choice is to start learning about our beloved VWs at an early stage/age and do much of the work ourselves. It saves all of that frustration caused by waiting for others to do it for you and there's the satisfaction of seeing the completed project work. Also, there is the cost factor which must be the bottom line of the project! There aren't many specialised tools required on a VW engine and most of them can be made in the home workshop.

Hi Matt. Sitting here bored s....less at present but all hell breaks loose next week with a Navy contract as well the normal ratbag students starting for the year! Only 5 months if I like to look at retirement and 56 weeks sick leave plus 20 odd weeks long service there. Maybe a few more VW or "toy aeroplane" projects to kill a bit of time.

Dallas,

You've just GOT to come up to Old Bar this year (October long weekend). I imagine it would be one of the few events where you can combine dubs & "toy planes", A working 1920's heritage airstrip is right next door. You should be able to find a thread or two (& pics) on AVD with a quick search. Talk to "Special Air Service", he lives there and might be able to send some pics or info about the airstrip.

Check out their web site (hasn't been updated yet, but all last years stuff is there.)

You could put your notch in the classic car show on the Sunday, I'm putting my beetle in, it's very informal, just park up.

Matt.

Might just do that and make it a longer weekend at Old Bar. The October period looks free.

Had a look at the model contest calendar and have to decide on the VW nationals for a look or go to Melbourne for the model state champs. It's all getting too hard as the quals for the next world champs is 3 state champs so it means a drive to Adelaide in March and Melbourne at Easter which is a total of about 5000km. NO! Not in the bloody Notch! Would like to go again as they are in the same town in East France as in 2000.

Might have a bit more time to look in the UK for Volkswagens. Only saw a few last year and actually got held up by one inconsiderate Kombi driver! It was on fire on the M25!

Chris, they are at Meadowbank TAFE. At least there's no general problems dicipline wise! They certainly keep us busy but it makes the time fly. Brings back memories of the old Nirimba, Quakers Hill, in the late 70s. Gone are the days of the great training establishments in this country. It's all crash courses and many trades are being "dumbed down" and the new Australian Colleges aren't going to help one bit. Not sure where the tradesmen/teachers are coming from in the engineering trades as the ones coming along now at 35-40 y/olds came through under the first watered down Fitting and Machining course of 1981. We had it reasonably right with the Module System from about 1992 and now that has gone through a major change this year and has been diluted again. Aren't us oldie tradesmen a bunch of gripers!

Back to the Notch. It lives here at North Richmond but not generally driven for the sake of it so you maybe didn't see it around when you were down here. It's really only been out a couple of times since Nambucca last year and that was to Kurri Kurri for a work conference in November last and IT WAS HOT! Half way up there I was longing for "old Henry" with the A/C.

Ahhh
that makes sense. I am RAAF with trades (construction) and we are facing the same problems. Very few skilled folk want to join. We want to bring back our apprentices, but the system wouldn't support it for us, Army maybe, but we are too small in numbers nowadays.

Almost forgot what caused it all and why we replied! Maybe it was a suggestion for the poor guy to order using some sort of hard copy rather than a phone. He would have had the record of what size clutch plate he ordered and the agreed price. Would have avoided that agro! These days the engines are the result of mix and match and in many cases, hardly resemble the original year. I can't remember if the guy said that he ordered a 200mm clutch or just gave a year. It doesn't matter now.

It is the chit chat section so maybe we just rambled on. If you can barter your labour and get someone else to do the work go for it. I'd actually rather use lathes, mills, grinders etc than work on any greasy old car but certainly wouldn't let any motor mechanic fiddle with my old VW! At least the VW is a nice clean engine to work on and is one of the simplest engines to build with the minimum tools, not like the wretched Fords etc. I keep on repeating that you get satisfaction when you do the work yourself and I think it is a great benefit to start this as early in the ownership as possible.

Babys...........found out what was causing them near 30 years back
Work.......... almost a filthy four letter word and I wouldn't do it only someone pays me each fortnight and gives me holidays every 9 weeks or so..
Renos......... Mother dear wants a carport for her car due to the VW residing in the garage but I'm playing the industrial deafness deal.

Hope that explains my input.

I know the feeling. Two years back I mentioned to an old guy who was a student making model steam engines that I was thinking of buying a new milling machine. I gave him a high price on the old one with all tooling and the old B..d said he'd take it. I couldn't go back on my word and had to go with the deal even though It wasn't a priority at the time. However, the new one is much bigger and takes a 6 cyl head which has already come in handy as I had to machine the Ford head last year. Great for boring heads and cases for 1916 as well!
