Checked out the new Passat today as I need to lease a new vehicle. I cannot afford the V6 model but can't decide which is better, the 2.0L turbo petrol or the 2.0 turbo diesel....both seem to have advantages.
Which one is best?
Hi
Diesels are great, the one thing that puts me off is spilt diesel all over the floor and the greasy handle at the browser, you feel like you need a shower after filling up.
Steve
^ I've been driving a pug 307 2l turbo diesel for nearly a year now and I've never copped a greazy handle. I guess it depends where you fill up.
And BTW, I'd even buy the turbo diesel over the V6. The 2l petrol woudn't even come a close second to the diesel I reckon. I can't rave enough about turbo diesels. I don't ever want to drive a petrol car as a daily driver again. Diesels have amazing torque and half the fuel of a petrol motor. 👍
The only way is to drive both of them, and in a variety of conditions that you will experience during your ownership.
I have the turbo petrol engine (Golf GTI) and it's fantastic. Not sure how it transforms in the bigger, heavier and slightly softer Passat though.

I got the oily diesel bowser hand when I borrowed the old mans 4wd though it was a bowser that trucks probably frequented. I was used to oily hand syndrome from flashlubing. That stuff seems to get on your hands no matter how careful you are as well.
What's going on I though you where going to buy a new Toyota to tow your car on a trailer? lol
Passat for a tow car????
This is a tow car.

stick to petrol as diesel is a dirty fuel.
I work at a servo and there is always diesel fuel on drive near the pump and it gets all over your shoes and hands, i,ve even notice truckies putting on gloves when filling up:o

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲
in the end it will come down to your individual preference.... comes down to what you want from the car... are you intending to keep it?? for how long?? is it worth the extra for the diesel? how long does it take to recover that extra cost on fuel savings... etc etc... are you towing.. are you driving long distances all the time etc...
personally i go for the performance side of a car so my choice comes back to petrol. but having said that the diesels are catching up... they are certainly much better than they used to be.
good luck with your purchase.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

I can't believe you guys. Telling someone not to buy a diesel based on a dirty fuel pump?! :duh
Please don't listen to these people. I drive a turbo diesel every day. They are awesome. My Godparents own TWO 405 pugs with turbo diesels. They used to own one and they loved it so much that when their other car was written off, they bought a second identical 405HDi. They've both racked up over 200K and are still going strong. And those cars are not the new generation single rail diesels. They are old tech compared to what you'd get.
But to get the best out them you do have to drive them differently.
First up, you don't have to rev it up all the time (although the new ones can), expect to drive it in the torque band, ie lower revs. Second, if you drive it like a Nana with the cruise control on as much as poss you will get two benefits; 1. you will only have to fill up half as often, 2. you'll be more relaxed and won't get speeding fines.
We recently went to visit my bro in Goulburn (250km) from my place in the western suburbs. We drove there, then all round the southern highlands, down to gunning and back for lunch, and a few other places over the few days we were there. My brother had to fill up his rodeo twin cab V6 twice...and it has a big tank. When we got back to sydney, we had just under half a tank left still.
On a few occasions last year diesel was actually CHEAPER than petrol.
Caltex gave us $1000 worth of free fuel coz most euro cars only take a certain type of Diesel (the pug isn't fussy) and they hadn't distributed it widely soon enough for some people. BTW it's now available everywhere anyway.
When we wanted to testdrive a HDi pug, we had to wait for new ones to come in and we had one day, cause the next day the car was sold. They are literally walking out of dealerships. Why? because they are that good.
I can drive round town at 60km/h in 5th gear (1300rpm) and the car will climb every hill.
On the open road, the further you drive, the better the fuel economy gets.
The car is quiet inside and very comfy, even on the freeway at 110km/h. But it can get off the lights as fast as most commodores if I need to.
I just looked up the specs, the diesel Passat only has 20nm less torque than the V6 and about 50more than the petrol. In my mind, if you are thinking of towing or doing any sort of highway driving, the TDi wins everytime and you can get them Chipped up to produce even more power and torque. Harding in QLD sells the chips.
BTW, do you need a passat sized car? Coz if not the golf has the same turbo diesel engine at a lower price with better power to weight and therefore better fuel economy.
Now before I get off my soapbox I need to say this. Australians need to get over this "diesel is dirty and smelly" crap. In the not too distant future diesel will replace petrol in everything but dedicated sports cars. It's already happening in Europe. And I say bring it on. The last Paris Dakar was won by a VW TDi. Can you imagine a commodore or falcon with a 4L 24valve TDi engine? An easy 200kw and 700nm of torque. It would be awesome to drive and so much better for the environment and for your fuel bills.
70beetle - buy the diesel!!! 👍
here here!
"Tell him 'We've already got one'"
Thanks guys thats good advice.
Im thinking more the diesel as my new job involves driving 180ks a day on the freeway between Newcastle and Gosford. Would be more economical.
The other consideration is the towing factor. I have a boat that weighs just over a tonne and I tow the beetle on a car trailer occasionally. My Honda Accord V6 towed them no probs. It had a heap more kilowatts but 40n less touque than the diesel Passat. I guess tougue is the more important factor when towing?
Hi Pete
I cant believe that you havent struck a dirty bowser, I wasnt bagging deisels, Im just saying its something to consider. I wont even fill up my petrol or LPG powered cars near a diesel bowser.
Other things to consider are the extra cost of fuel, but this is offset by the economy another thing is the more frequent oil changes, but these are getting longer now that diesels are running cleaner, the oil doesn't get as contaminated.
Steve
if you want to think of the environment for the purchase, definently dont go diesel.
bitemeoz, can you explain why? this sounds like something i'd like to know.
thanks.
henry.
just get a ford falcon with dedicated LPG because they are good on fuell and you will still be able to tow and you will not be unhappy to see all thoes km clock up on the ford because it wont make much difference on your resale and you would be making less green house gases then a dirty diesel hahahah
