Hey
A few weeks ago i did a fortnight's work experience at the local VW dealership as part of my course.
During which time i worked my butt off, arriving 30mins early and staying late nearly every day, and doing everything plus more that was asked of me.
At the end of the work experience i asked nicely if they wanted to put on an apprentice.
They told me they only wanted to put on a senior mechanic at the moment as they already have 2 apprentices on the go.
I thought "fair enough" and moved on.
Today i hear that a guy in my class got himself an apprenticeship there!:cry
Sound dodgy to anyone else?
Sounds sus to me Jos.
Interesting if not sus because their circumstances must have changed pretty rapdily for them to suddenly need an apprentice when only days before they didn't.

Zactly.
When i left there i left them my resume and said "Well if anything changes here's my resume because i would love to work here"
They knew i have a passion for Veedubs.. and the guy they hired hates them... so go figure... 🤪
Local Hobart based dealership or Derwent Park location?

Hobart.. the nice shiney new showroom and workshop.. would have been a great place to do an apprenticeship
No doubt - but must say I am biased against them.
Went in one day just for a browse as I had time on my hands. Wandered looked, opened doors, sat in cars etc. Having the time of my life dreamin but all I got from sales people was a cold unnerving feeling that I shouldn't be there.

I wouldn't know if it was dodgy...the best course of action would be to go in there and ask them about it,like why they told you what they did but then hired a "junior" anyway. Ring up the TOP PERSON and make an appointment to speak to them about it,not some underling wannabee.Tell them what you think about it and be honest but politically correct. I would have believed what they told you in the first place as it is more beneficial for them to hire someone "senior" compared to someone young. If you question them about it at least you will know the full story and if you TRY to be polite you might be next in line...... It sucks though....
Good luck.

Yeah.. had the same thing already planned Mick.
Not really keen on working there now.. but would still like a "Please explain"
And if it WAS something i did, i'd like to know for my next lot of work experience coming up in a week..
Sounds a bit suss Jo, but go in there and chat to them. Show them how keen and passionate you are. Don't burn your bridges though, as that opportunity may raise it's head for you in the future.
Yeh go and speak to them, and wear a real low cut top!
Keeping it real !
Ur clearly just way too good for them ..... They were obviously very afraid that a chick would show up all the tough boys ......
Or maybe they were afraid that you and your friends would bring in your "smelly" VW's to drip oil all over their pristine floors ????
🤘
ask them if theyve seen gone in 60 seconds... angelina jolie is clearly the best mechanic in the world...
...but then again i wouldnt hire angelina jolie... she would steal my cars and i would get waay too distracted. :alien
After finding out what you did it is possibly a good thing that they did not give you a job, I for one think they dont sound like the type of people i would want to work for.
It is hard to find sometimes but you want an employer who apreciates you for what you do and how you work.
Keep looking there will be opportunities hopfully better.
A workshop with a broader scope of cars would be a better learning experience i think
Good Luck
Derek
yeah that sounds a bit suss to me...anyway you should come up to QLD everyone's screaming for tradies up here. The first place I tried when I was looking to get a apprenticeship I got a job at and I got replys from the other two place as well. Now my boss is trying to get another person whether it's a apprentice or tradesman. After advertising in all the papers and on seek.com the only reply's he's had are from seek.com with one guy from Afrika and one from Russia! So don't worry there's definitely a workplace out there for you.
THe MC Bat Commander's motto: "Never do now, what you could do for 24 hours straight, all night, the night before."
unfortunately, you are in a difficult position. to any observer it looks like they've deliberately lied to you. the thing is, they are the ones at liberty to hire who they like and they don't actually have to explain themselves unless they are stupid enough to say "well, it's coz you're a sheila" or something to that effect. I'm guessing they are not that stupid. You are also not even an apprentice making you lower than low in their priorities.
all you can do is politely ask the person who refused you why they chose your friend over yourself, but again, they don't have to answer. if they are rude to you then you can complain politely.
you could make a big ruckess, but if you ever potentially need any help from any of the people involved again, or if you ever plan to buy a new VW in tassie, I'd advise you against it. Coz people can be very vindictive. And someone being vindictive on your new car is a bad bad thing. the other thing is, if you involved the media or upset the wrong people, you may find it hard to get an apprenticeship anywhere in tassie.
I'm guessing your in the automotive industry to stay. I'm also guessing that you be close to VWs. I'd suggest you send everyone you know to the other dealership. Don't tell them why, just say, "trust me, you don't want to deal with XXXX". That, from your perspective, is the truth and if you are good mechanic that looks after customers, people will listen to you.
Yeah
I plan to just go in there next week and very politely ask why.. i'm too nice a person to get really nasty lol...
that's a good thing Jo, In my experience being nasty never got anyone anywhere in the long term.
Yeah but there has been times where i've been walked over because i've been too nice.. but thats not for here..
There is a BIG difference between "being nice" and sticking up for yourself. You can be forcefull and polite at the same time. How far you want to take it is up to you.If they know you aren't going to settle for being second best they will most likely respect you for giving them your opinion on the matter. They will most likely show you more respect if they know you are not a pushover and show a higher level of maturity that someone else they have employed.Trust me,make a good sound lasting impression and you will be someone they will remember and might hold you in higher reguard if another position becomes available.Either way you can't loose. You have gained experience from this situation that will make you a more sound employee, especially if you ask questions.Asking a potential employer lots of questions and getting them to justify answers they have given allow them to see your maturity. Ask them why they said what they did and question the action they have taken in employing someone they said they wouldn't. Everyone has the right to do that....

When are people going to realise that a woman can be just as good a mechanic as man 😉
1963 Single Cab Ute: "El Concreto"
1962 Baja Beetle: "Peanut"
1968 Porsche 912 SWB: "Pip"
1972 Kombi Snail: "The Snail"
2012 Skoda Octavia Scout: "Scout"
2016 Scirocco R: "Rocco"
I doubt that asking them to justify their decision will raise their esteem for you Jo. We're talking about car trade people here. Not the most sensitive bunch at the best of times. Let it go. Keep pestering them if you want to work there. Who knows... the guy they've put on might prove to be the wrong person and the position might come up again.
If you call every month to see if there's a position there, you will eventually be there. You'll make their decision an easy one when the time comes.
Good luck.

Sorry Mick if you're in the car trade. I am too, but you and I would be more sensitive and caring than most in the trade.👍

I've been out of it for about 4 years now,but had exactly the same problem when we were hiring a female apprentice, which is why I suggested she (Jo) go back and question them about their decision. She has nothing to lose by doing it and the fact that she would question them at all would let them know she was serious about the job,if they don't already understand that. Unfortunately a LOT of the larger dealerships think their crap doesn't stink and that they are above everyone else....which is one of the reasons I got out.....yes I'm VERY sensitive:puke well parts of me are anyway.....:jesus

Spot on IMO you want it keep biting till you get it-- if the person they hired hates VW's he aint going to be happy and they aren't going to be happy with him, so sooner or later this job IS going to come up again--- the new kid wont last--- hopefully for you it's gonna be sooner rather than later--just keep in thier faces--nicely--and answer the phone when they ring--chin up ,
Cheers , Al .

the same day they realise that it's wrong too...
rape a woman
beat your wife
ridicule a woman for her periods
belittle women for pregnancy and mothering
It might be against the law, but the law only punishes people for doing the wrong thing. It can't adjust your mind if it's warped. women are different to men. of course they are. personally i'm stoked about that. what most of rednecks with the attitude problem fail to realise is that being male is different from being a man. A man encourages a woman to be the best she can be instead of treating her like a 2nd class citizen.

What do you mean Muslims? Male chauvanism was ingrained Australian culture until twenty years ago. And there are still some places in Oz that have yet to come into the 20th century in this area. I would have thought Jo's situation demonstrated this very clearly.
Some of our highest ranking footy players and leaders have been guilty of all these things and worse. They are for most part white, "true blue", skippies.
Let's be very careful who we go calling a kettle when a large number of our own pots are still black.
