Hi
I have come accross this kubel replica, alot of people on this forum must have come accross it too.

Is this a good buy if purchased for a little less than he is asking? i know a replica does not come close to the real thing but can anyone see a problem with this deal?
Basically i'm looking for reasons not to buy it......

I'll take the gun --if it works--deffinately 1st dibs😠

If thats US$7.5k then thats about AUS$10k + frieght which I would'nt have a clue how much--it dosn't look like there wont be anything that don't need majour fixing--so if you're a spraypainting pannelbeating auto electrician mechanical engineer with an import company that has strong connects in the motor vehicle registry and more farkin money than sense DEFFINATELY buy it!!

It looks great and I'd love to drive it as is.

Rego in Oz might be difficult/impossible as they might hang the "You've rebodied it, therefore it's an ICV, so all the modern crap applies.", rule.

If you can afford to do it, I say, "Do it."

It's a 65 pan that hasn't been modified so it should be ok, right?

Anyway could't it be put on a registered RHD Beetle convertible here? You are only changing the body panels then, it would still be a Volkswagen convertible, wouldn't it?

yea, if the pan is orig. and no mods done to the pan, then its a 'rebodied vehicle' rather than an ICV.

so its all good in that regard though. But registering it as a beetle with the paper work will clear it up for the DOT, however, if u get pulled ova, or if the DOT people come out to have a look, your gonna have trouble. You need engineering compliance plate (blue plate) to register a rebodied vehicle to prove its road worthy and safe (according to the bodies year of manufacture), just like registering a fibreglass beach buggy in Aust. Otherwise any bob, dick or harry could just register a chassis with any body they want without worry of safety... if we didn't have that system, someone could register a chassis with a body made out of cardboard or paddlepop sticks.

When was the body manufacturered? being a rebodied vehicle, if it was put together very early, it may be able to pass engineering alright cause it has to comply with the necessary government specs, hoops and constrictments of the bodies yr of manufacture.

I see on the ad he says that he rekons it was used during a show in the 60's. This could mean that it is HIGHLY likely to be easily engineer complied and registered, if you are able to have evidence of the body being manufactured back then in the 60's. The Australian Design Rules and regs didn't come in till the 70's WHICH IS A BIG BONUS in regards to ease of complying the body, if u are able to prove its manufacture prior to the 70's.

my advice right now, is to contact the guy, ask him what proof he has of yr of manufacture of the body. If nil, then u may be up shit creek. (pardon the bluntness, but there would be alot of work and money to be spent on this car in modifying the body (if even applicable) to comply to today's design rules and regulations, if u are unable to prove its manufacture date is being in the 60's.)

Once you have this evidence, or u know of evidence he has and he has told ya the date of manufacture of the body (not the chassis), print out his advertisment and bring ova all information you got, including pictures, and get the opinion of an engineer by consultation. He/she won't necessarily be able to give a definite yes or no, but will be able to point out concerns with the car, and risks, or potential heart breaks and restrictions or points you should be careful of.

If you want ot spend all the money and time getting this thing to oz, you wanna make sure u cover ur back side when it comes to background research with these things. last thing u wanna do is to go to all that trouble and find out your not allowed to register the car and enjoy it on the open roads.

Best of luck mate, luv the kubels, always wanted on myself, outta my league though.

Regards,
Christopher.

Cheers, thank for your input, i think he will have trouble proving it was built in the sixties.
It is currently registered in california, but we all know it's a little different over there and mods/rods from the US would not come close to complying with for eg. RTA regs.

I know you can buy fibreglass repo bodies in the states for about 15kUS, alot of dough.
i thought this would be something equivilent for alot less and a a bonus you get steel instead of plastic.
I'm into military vehicles and re-enacting, it would be great fr this sort of thing.

I'll create another post but i'm most interested in anything VW Military from ww2, infact any period.
Also interested in Vw's of the german police forces.

Cheers

there's a few shwimmins around in oz.
I think the fibreglass body is acceptable in oz if you use all the beetle running gear as well as brakes etc.
$15k is alot for a glass body though.

Bruce Meyers made one fibreglass replica of the Kubelwagen. It's now owned by his good friend Andy Felix.

The molds were lost in the sell up of B F Meyers and Co back in the early 1970s.

to Me thats nothing like a Kubelwagen {bucket car]

it looks as though it was built in a backyard
by a [rough] handyman welder...

it doesn't look professionally made at all....

I doubt if that spare wheel ever fitted under the guards...

but its unique...
one of a kind...
