Just wondering if anyone has had any experience in moving to Africa in respect of moving all your stuff. We plan to by a shipping container to put all our stuff inm but i would love to take my beloved veedub with me, but wondering what it might sting me to do so (import taxes and registration etc.)?

there's 50+ countries in Africa..... which one are you going to?

best bet would be to talk to the embassy of whichever country you're going to.

good luck

Kenya. The embassy tells you how it is meant to happen...does not mean it will happen that way, hence why I am seeing if anyone has experienced importing vehicles as an immigrant.

we went on a tour around east africa on a big merc truck with a tour group, we asked them how they got the truck over and they said that they shipped over the bare shell and drove over the other truck from europe with all the parts... batteries etc, because... they said... the had had stuff stolen of the trucks before, when shipped over,... only hear say.

we sent some stuff over by post, car chargeer for our video camera but it was held by customs and never delivered.

my dad works in nigeria (for 12 years) and has great trouble with parts being sent over from the UK, so i'd be very careful,
I should imagine with a western based company that offers insurance there should be no problems.

There are often ex pat websites fro most countries, try and find one for kenya and ask them

Has your Veedub got bullet proof glass? There are 50+ carjackings a week in Nairobi.
People also regularly steal parts off cars stuck in traffic jams.
My parents who work there recently had door trim nicked off their 1984 corolla while stuck in a traffic jam.
They sent their stuff a few years ago by unaccompanied baggage with their airline.

I have no personal experience of what you are enquiring about, but Africa is so nasty and corrupt that I wouldn't take anything there, especially if it is valuable. Is your stuff so valuable that you must live with it? How long will you be there? Consider storing it for your return, or use this as an opportunity to rid yourself of your stuff and bring what you get there, back here, on your return.

My pennyworth.

Yeah well we were planning to put it all in a shipping container and that way stuff should not be stolen. Insurance is always a necessity whether it is in Australia or Africa. I think I might leave my veedub with my parents for the moment and see how long I am over there.
