I'm looking for a copy of Hot4s number 10. It features a sky blue, slammed and narrowed Ghia on chrome 356 rims/nipples which belonged to John Waldron. This was one of the first cars to make my jaw drop way back in time and I'm chasing the issue to have a read up on it and just to go back and remember the first car that ever really caught my eye!?!?!?!?
John's car was the cover and feature car of Issue#8 of VWMA, but that issue has since sold out (it was a Karmann-Ghia Special edition). The car now sits on BRMs.
aahhh is that now GIA:61?
That would make sense then....has he owned it all that time and still does? Looked better with the 356's IMO.
Well, I guess if anyone has a copy of that issue of VWMA to sell I'd take that aswell?

this be it? Was it always a QLD car?
No, John shifted from NSW to Qld for work reasons.
what year was it first built, around 95/96? been around a while and still looking schmick! Definately one of neatest ghia's around.
Thanks for those kind words. Nice to know that the Ghia had that effect! That was the plan. It took my brother and I 4-years to build and aside from a few scraps to the blue pan it is still as good today.
I have owned the car since the late 80's and it has been in that condition for around 16 years. It was in storage for seven years while I was working in Far North Queensland. When I was reunited with it I put the BRMs on - however I did labour over the choice of rim.
I drive the car when I can which as also included up and down a drag strip (poorly) and several times in torential rain. I can still see the smile on Craig's face as he passed me on the way back from the last Nambucca, when I managed to break the drought in that part of the country!
I have remained true to the Ghia's custom - no side glass design despite the cold and the rain. You know you are alive.
The Ghia has been off the road for the past several months while the engine has been rebuilt. Not a capacity change, just a further improved 1600.
I hope to have it all back together soon.
Last year the Ghia took out (to my surprise) car of the day at the Caloundra Hot Rod and Bike Show. This upset a few of the Musle Car dudes that were there, however the bikers loved it.
I get alot of enjoyment out of it and when the kids are older I hope to finish some of the original ideas for it!?
you should be proud, its an awesome car and has certainly stood the test of time! Being such an awesome car way back then, and still being in the same league now, well done!
Whats the next outing planned?
If all goes to plan I hope to take the Ghia to the Jamboree at Willowbank. Its an event that I have always wanted to get the Ghia to. Be fun to to put it among the young 'bolt-on' boys. Might even dust off some of the old display - if I can get an off-sider or two. See how things go.
Mainly looking forward to some cruising - Some of the South East Queensland KG owners are talking of a Karmann Kruise after Warwick. I look forward to that.
Your beetles remind me of my time with Flat Four Sydney back in the late 80's
John
So are you working on a 61 Ghia?
