Basically I'm a lazy prick or have better things to do when it comes to working on the car these days. I suspect that I may have some bits and pieces floating around in the bell housing area but dont wont to pull the engine to have a look only to find that there isnt. Has anyone ever drilled a small hole in a type 1 bell housing?

Cheers

Paul

There is no room between the flywheel and housing to have any parts in I should think.Noise from throw out or starter maybe?

yeah I thought this too, until a couple of years ago I had a 10mm Bolt that holds the throw out bearing guide in place come loose. It would get picked up when the engine revved past 4000 and sounded like a machine gun. The sound I have at the moment is similar, happens after 6000rpm, although no where near as bad.

Hi

I once lost valve lash cap in the sump of my WBX, I fitted a magnet in the oil drain plug and it was there next oil change. Maybe you could do the same thing, drill a hole in the bell housing and fit a magnet and see what turns up. I would be careful about cutting the bell housing as you need all the strength that you can get with that lump hanging out the back
