After giving up on my scat centre pull linkage after losing idle on my twin 36 dhrla dell equiped twinport, again.... I installed empi hex bar linkage to solve my problems.... I'm definately a novice at tuning and haven't suceeded in getting idle or not blowing back up thru the carbs, I will prob be able to get it to run good enough to get to the nearest dub doctor to tune it up for me, can someone please recommend someone good? I live in Ipswich.... I think theres a place in Sumner/Wacol which would be my closest option? Pref closer the better, or failing that, any experts out there wanna come round to my place for a beer and cash in hand per hour for a couple or few hours and teach and tune the little beast with me?

if they idled etc before, they should again........reguardless of linkage

i would have a guess that you have had to pull them off with the manifolds to do the change and plug leads

i'd double and triple check the leads are in the correct position because of you mentioning popping through the carbs.

start at number one on the dizzy..... anticlockwise should be one, two, three, four

if that fails, and it seems to run well when the throttle is wide open, but not on small amounts of throttle and idle, have a look at cleaning the idle jets/cicuit........there is a good look inside some dells on my engine thread........

Here is some more helpful sites

http://www.carburetorclinic.com/tech_articles.htm

http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/idf_adjustment_controls.htm

The trick is to set them with the linkage disconnected.
THEN connect the linkage

If yiou are not expierenced you wont have a hope in hell with out a synchometer to help balance the carbs

PS
the Empi linkage is not the best linkage by a long shot.

the hex bar is aluminium and bends and the arm you connect the accelerator cable is too short

In Hex bar Redline Weber make the best or the CB one

Thanks for the great info guys, thanks for your call dumone, much appreciated, after your call I thought back a few nights and yes, I had removed a lead for access to one of the intake nuts (my first thought for dropped idle, air leak...) and yup, it wasn't back on correctly, so that would explain carb blowback straight away, esp late at night like it was! and yes, it idled fine before so now I'll check my idle jets as I've had problems with blocked mains before (due to water in tank, go great New Zealand weather!)
Yeah, I've read that the empi linkage isn't the best, but its 400 percent better than the centre pull I was using, foot flat to the floor, no matter what cable and pedal settings we used, could only just open the butterflies to just over a half! Already with the empi hex amaturely fitted, with foot to the floor the butterflies are full open and the stops on the carb lever thingys (I had to machine/modify another set of scat ones as the empi ones didn't fit my dells... ) actually hit the stop, will be nice to drive my oval and get full throttle out of it! plus if anything rounds out or bends on the empi hex I'll remachine it out of decent billit stock or stainless using empi bits as templates...
I watched the last mechanic that tuned it with a stethescope instead of syncrometer and he did an alright job, so will have a stab at it tomorrow night, might p1ss the neighbours off a bit much if I head out to the shed for a burn now!

You can use a piece of hose
You need to listen for the exact same sound in both.

BUT

If it does blow back you will damage an ear drum

giving up on the twins, have caused more headaches than not since fitted, they were fun while they lasted, can't get it to run at all now, loads of backfiring and spitting out carbs, tried new coil, condenser, reset timing, cleaned jets, checked all wiring, leads, dizzy, fuel, linkage, cables, fuses etc etc, had enough, going back to factory single carb this week, at least it was reliable with that, the auto choke is a bonus, its my daily drive to work, my neighbour will be happy not to hear me trying to back out of my drive at 530 in the morning!! don't have time to doodle with twins at the moment, just need a car that goes. Will build up a new new engine in my spare time that will have the go to match my show!
