Searched but couldn't find the answer. So here goes.
I have a Type 1 with a 36hp and its gotten abit tired and I would like to run 12v aswell so I can have some form of reasonable stereo so I figure a 1600 is the way to go. But first I have a few questions.
What does a good condition 1600 go for?
What else needs to be modified for the swap, modifications to the trans axle at all?
Can i use my current clutch as its in good condition.
The car runs the heater box setup around the exhaust, can this setup still be run or is this not possible as the heater currently works quite well.
And any other useful info would be great
cheers

I would say $500 - $1000 for something decent used, from a wrecker with a short warranty.
Private you may get cheaper but luck of the draw unless you can check it it thoroughly and know what to look for.
You can use the same trans, but you will either need to clearance the bellhousing for the 12v flywheel from the 1600, or change the flywheel on the 1600 for a 6v one.
If you go to the 12v flywheel, you will need a 12v starter motor, and conversion bush for the bellhousing.
If you change for a 6v one, I would suggest finding a 6v with a 200mm clutch as the 180mm is not designed for the brute horse power of a 1600!!!
On the other hand, you could use your clutch on a 6v flywheel and not beat on it too much.
Your 36hp heater boxes and exhaust will not fit the 1600, the width of the engine is different, as well as the exhaust diameter...
When you fit later heater boxes to the vehicle, its easier to put the heater boxes in after the block, or you will have clearance issues getting the heater boxes where the flaps are past the firewall.
hope this helps a little..
where are you located
What year is your car as your will probally have to change the gearbox as well
If you change the box you will have front mount issues possibly depending on the year.
The tunnel trans case has a different front mount, and to put a syncro box in you need to weld in a new front mount bracket.
You can use a split bus nose cone, but it will cause the engine to sit too low at the rear seal, and the front of the trans too high..
The car in question is a 56, So what would be the best option do you think?
