Hi all. I've just discovered this forum and have spent that last hour or so reading past posts. Good info here.:thumb Wish i had found it while installing my engine!
Anyway, I have a few questions relating to my 1973 kombi gearbox that i would be grateful for anyone to comment on:
1) after running for a while (an hour or so) the gear selection gets really tough. i put a new clutch in 6 months ago with a recon engine so am assuming that is not the casue. i have to really push and guide the stick into the gears (1st, 2nd) and reverse ends up being a grinding/crunching job. when the van is cold this isn't a problem. any ideas?
2) when driving around a LH corner (in any gear) i get this horrible grinding noise coming from g/box. if i engage the clutch the grinding goes away, leading me to think that it is g/box rather than CVs. (when i put the engine in i took out all the CVs and repacked them along with new boots - seemed okay). the noise is only for LH corners. ideas?
3) i know of a rebuilt 2L g/box for sale that i am considering installing, rather than reconditioning my existing one. would it be compatible with the 1800 engine? and is it absolutely necessary to remove the engine to install a g/box?
thanks,
brett

The engine and gearbox come out quite easily as a unit. It'd be simplest to pull them both out and reinstall as one unit. Pulling the engine really isn't that hard - although... it'd be more of a pain if you didn't have the top engine hatch, which you should have ('73), but might not - I have seen a 234xxx (1974) model bus with an upright motor and no engine hatch (it was RHD).

I heard the 1800 would struggle a bit with the 2L box, you'd have difficulties on hills (hehe, as if a bog stock bus doesn't!). Maybe if you haven't got many hills around (I've never been to Perth) and you don't drive loaded to the hilt you'd be OK. Guy I know had the inverse, a 2L motor on an 1800 box, he said it just used more fuel thanks to having to rev more. I'd want to monitor engine temperatures, the 1800 might just have to work a little too hard.

No ideas on the GB-related questions sorry.

When was the GB oil last changed?

Cheers, A.

thanks aggri.
i kind of thought as much re 2L g/box being a bit much for the 1800 engine.
i changed the gear oil when i put in the new engine about 6 months ago. i was looking at just chucking in another g/box rather than reconning the old one. am pretty busy at the moment and just want to keep the van on the road.
thanks for your input. any other thought/ideas more than welcome as to the problems i described before🤪

You should be able to bolt a 2l box up to an 1800 engine. The differences are in the bell housings. The 2l box is also a different length so your gearstick will move (can't remember which way!).

My thought about the grinding round LH corners is the diff but that is total guesswork!

You can't remove the gearbox on its own unfortunately because you need to be able to move it backwards to disengage it at the front mount.

hey..
1st new coupling on gear selector shaft prob needs replacing as its prob stil orig then gear sel may do its thing
2nd.. i woulda went with LH cvs.. have another look as they are easier to pull off than g/box..
3rd.. yep i reckon that the 2l will bolt straight up..
Q: btw how do you know its a 2l?
A: you can tell by counting the ribs under the box n there should be 5 whole ribs from memory.. cause the 1800 has 3 whole ribs and 2 angled off ones that make the 5..
like i said its from my memory as i havent had a bay in a cupla years yeah..
good luck with it n keep us posted..
cheers h

thanks woz_mnskmosi and h for your replies.
at this stage i've decided to just keep driving and hope that the old girl doesn't crap out completely.
i'll have a look at the gear selector shaft when i get a chance as well as re-check the cv's and diff(?) noise.
thanks again
