that's cool. hope you get what your aiming for dyno wise.
looks like you got some good gear in there.
looks great/.
2443TT ·
Great work, and thats one tightly packed engine bay! I'll bet a lot of hours went into planning, installing, changing your mind and re-installing all the components to make it all fit and work. Its not intercooled right, or did i miss something?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
yeah it is intercooled. It sits where the bellows would normally be. We recessed the intercooler into the bellows area and put a 10" Davies Craig thermo fan on the back side of it to suck air through. It gets the normal flow from the vents on the side of the car and the fan will pull air through as well. Garrett core 400 x 250 x 5" thick! Pipes from intercooler to throttle body and turbo are pretty short as well.
Dasdubber ·
Nice one Brendenn - now you and Troy have to promise no more changes to the engine until you at least get it on the road/strip this time!! 😉
Al
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Pretty much think it is going to be as reliable as we can get it with this sort of set up. Engine wise we used the best stuff we could get as far as strength is concerned and also from a weight point of view.
If only we could hold the same views of the gearbox but I guess time will tell. I have a 2.0 bus box sitting here should the inevitable happen. It will make a quick trip to dangerous' place for a holiday and make over(and definately no pink paint!)
Sioux ·
doing the plugs on that would be interesting ... 👍
type3lover ·
That's soooo nice mate!!
Love your work...
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
platinum plugs so they only have to be changed every so often. It's actually easier to jack the car up and do them from underneath!! 2 person job also makes it fairly easy too.
Turbo54 ·
Very nice setup, what does the blue tap handle drain?
T54
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Inline tap from bottom of dry sump tank to oil pump. Car is not intended to be daily driver so tap gets turned off when not in use so tank doesn't try to drain back into sump. Plus 8 odd litres of oil in the sump might be a bit over full LOL.
dangerous ·
Any updates to report Brennden and Troy?
grogy ·
very nice setup, will scare some other road users
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Yeah Dave dyno date has been pushed back to the 2nd June. We drop it down there on the monday and hopefully by the following week Troy will pick it up and drive it home(he is starting to get excited about actually driving it)
If all goes well we should have some k's on it by the dyno day and full boost set on it for a run on the rollers.
TheMiniMan ·

Not long to dyno time now hey Brennden!
Couple of questions - you guys are running Autronic ECU right? What ECU if so? I'm trying to do some research at the moment.
Also where abouts are you going to do the dyno tuning? (can pm me if you prefer).
Cheers
Al
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Autronic SM2/3. That's about all I can tell you as far as the model is concerned. Whether it is a 2 or a 3 dunno as i didn't buy it LOL
Yep Monday is the day so fingers crossed.
C and J Motorsport are doing the install and tune. They are Autronic dealers and do all my unlce's Formula Vee dynoing and have a quiet appreciation for Volksy's even though they'd never admit it.
Let's say when my cousin got his 2.5L Type 4 dynoed in his dual cab they took it for a run up the street and the thing went sideways when he hit 2nd gear on the bend in the street and his pants had remnants of his brekky and lunch all over the crutch...

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well we have waited for nearly a month casue they have been busy so today was the day they wanted the car there to start on it. We dropped it off at 9am this morning and asked if possible to put it in the workshop and not leave it out in the pouring rain we have had all day. I drove past at 3.45pm and it hasn't moved an inch. They were also supposed to have a distributor modified and ready to go for the EFI but they forgot to do it.
Let's hope this part of the puzzle doesn't take forever...... we gotto put some k's on it before the dyno day and Valla!! Then we can have full boosty fun.....
will keep you posted of all goings on!!
westi ·
cheer's for the heartbreaking update.
i hate it when shops do that.yeh were ready, oops maybe were not.sorry just doesn't cut it.
i hope all goes well for tomorrow.
when i sent my car out the guy said don't worry i have heaps of jets and vent's etc.etc. then rang me the next day saying could i polease send as many jets as possible as he couldn't find his,and then asked were the timing should be set because he couldn't get it to stop pinging once warm.nice one tool.
it ended up being junk at the bottom of one of the main jets and a sucked in gasket.
hopefully no tools for you.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well today it was parked in the same position all day. Drove past this morning and this arvo. Troy is paying them a visit and wanting a timeline of when things will be started and finished.
After all we had to wait just over 6 weeks to drop the car there so you'd think it would have been worked on by now.....
TheMiniMan ·
Bill & Kalvin are busy little bees, they`re good at what they do, be patient, they really do mean well.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Mate wouldn't go anywhere else for that reason alone but it would be nice if they just showed a little bit of interest. Dropped the car off and didn't really want to listen to Troy when he was telling them stuff about the car etc.
We have been pretty patient over the last 6 and a bit weeks waiting for them......
TheMiniMan ·
Yeah Brennden i know what it`s like, but good things come to those who wait & those guys usually don`t look like they want to listen to anyone anyway,,, It`s a bit like talking to the patient before looking at the x-rays , if you get my drift? I`m "sort of" the same (in that regard) with my mini customers, it`s a matter of "yeah right, ok, whatever, oky doky, no worries, leave it with me", etc,,, & when i do finally get enough time to have a "GOOD LONG" look at it "Without any distractions", then i can make the right diagnosis & carry on with what "NEEDS" to be done first rather than tinkering & stuffing around with other crap that sucks up all the time
Not bagging anyone out, Those guys know what they`re doing (with Autronic) Just that they are a busy bunch of nutters "ALL THE TIME"
I`m not like them in many respects , but ,,,, i`m the same with time frames,,, i`m booked out for 3 months & yet it allways seems to blow out to 4 months, it`s just the way things go sometimes,,, a quick little tune up can turn into a head gasket problem which blows out to a cracked head & full engine re-build,,, etc etc etc,,, & then everyone is set back another week... you know what it`s like.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Car sat again today quietly waiting for someone to work on it. Troy went down there to talk to them about the car and show a few things regarding wiring etc etc and they seemed totally disinterested and reckoned it might be ready by christmas!!! Troy called this arvo and told them he was going to pick up the car tomorrow and take it home to do some more stuff on it.
A total change of heart from them and now want him to go there tomorrow to nut out what has to be done and how it will all go etc etc. they will start on it before the end of the week apparantly.
If only they had just shown some interest and we hadn't had to threaten them with going elsewhere to get something done would have been nice.
Don't get me wrong these guys are great tuners but a few of them with the typical anti VW attitude calling Troy's car a "shit box" were lucky he didn't give them a necessary trip to the dentist.
Tomorrow is another day and hopefully one of positive action.
TheMiniMan ·
Quote from previous post above--> "I`m not like them in many respects"
:-)
Yeah, we all need a good wake up . now & then :-)
& yeah they did have a similar attitude towards minis a while ago, that was until Lionel & Bruce Ayres told them about my twin cam turbo injected motorbike cyl head conversion onto the mini donk :-) They quickly tucked their collective heads in :-)
hope all goes well Brennden

Thanks mate. tomorrow is another day and hopefully one full of helpfull people.....
without the anti dak dak attitude.
westi ·
i feel for you guy's,some times you are best of picking it up.if there not keen it usually shows up in the tune, they usually give up way to early rather than realy nutting it out.
hopefully all is good this afternoon.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well things will start on the car tomorrow YAY. But the downside is it mighten be ready for the Dyno day mid July🙁 We are keeping our fingers crossed though!!
Troy went there and chatted with the guys who will be doing the install and they got a bit of a shock when Troy opened the engine hatch and showed them what they have to do. He said the look on their face was almost of awe. There was something along the lines of "damm look at that". Then they started looking in detail at all the little things and were impressed with the effort and planning gone into the engine and fitment of accessories. Troy then lifted the bonnet and showed them the fuel system in the spare wheel well. They commmented "someone's spent a lot of money on this" then asked Troy who did it all of which he replied that he did most of it himself. They were very impressed he reckons.
Anyway they have a race meeting on soon that they have to get a few cars ready for so the Fasty won't see too much action just before the meeting is held due to racepreps etc etc. But hopefully it looks like she will be running for Valla. It's not a definate but we will remain positive that all stays on track.

Coil packs and ECU are getting mounted today in readiness for wiring to be done for all sensors etc etc.
1303Steve ·
Hi
I been reading this post for ages, very impressive.
I dealt with a few non VW shops in the past and you can see their eyes glaze over when you mention that your thinking of doing this & that to an old VW.
Usually when they see what you have done they get more interested. Sounds like this is the case.
There is a tuner in Sydney who has reputation for never talking on the phone or calling back, when Leigh Harris took his turbo bug to him and later I took my turbo WBX to him, he realised we were serious, we now get very good service.
Steve
2443TT ·
Thats pretty much the story with all performance car tuning. Consider how many tyre kickers these tuners have to deal with. Kids with no real money, cars that are crap etc.
Then mention you want to modify a vw with a turbo and the average guy will just walk away. Most vw people are too broke to maintain their cars is how people see it, let alone afford to make it out accelerate some super cars.
One of the best tuners in cairns got out of the business completely because of all the crap that is talked behind his back, and having to deal with a bunch of people that are basicly wankers with no money. The last car he built and tuned I was fortunate to go for a ride in. 625rwhp on 32lb boost on BP98 on the street. Utterly insane, and its a shame he wont ever be tuning cars like that again.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well I drove past this arvo and there she was jacked up in the rear with someone on a stool working away. ECU will be mounted on what is now the firewall(panel behind the back set in the Fastback) and the coil packs will be mounted on the LHS and RHS inner boot panels( 2 coils on either side). Hopefully Troy will get some pics or I might try and get some of the progress next week.
It is nice to drive past and see it is actually getting worked on though!! Troy has about 3 or 4 people who drive past regularly and ring him with reports of what is happening. So basically he knows everytime his car is getting touched/moved or just sitting patiently waiting to be bought to life!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Seems like there has been a bit of work on the car this week. Been past every day and seen someone working on it at least 3 days so far this week. Troy is going to go and have a look at what has been done hopefully get some pics. When I get them i'll post em up.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Boys at dyno have been really busy!!! Car has had a hell of a lot or wiring done and changed for ECU. thermo's for oil cooler and intercooler are now going to be controlled by ECU. Cylinder head temp sensors are being fitted and will control thermos switching on/off. What they have done so far looks really good with all the wiring being heat shrinked and very tidily placed. Troy has to go there tomorrow and remove intake manifolds and Porsche fan shroud for the Cylinder head sensors to be fitted as well as some minor wiring for the alternator too. Hopefully he'll remember to take the camera for some pics!!

Spent the whole day today putting the engine back together. I am stuffed from bending crouching and getting into positions someone half my size would find hard. Engine looks pretty much the norm till you start adding all the intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rails and injectors, handfulls of sensors and wiring and the abundance of room disappears!! Basically ready to be started apart from finishing off coil mounting brackets, air flow sensor, barcket for wiring plug from dizzy and the final touches on hall sensor in dizzy. After that ready to turn the key and see what happens!!! guys at dyno are really showing some respect for the car and the amount of work that has gone into it and what I did all day today!!

Dyno guys are heading to Sydney this weekend for some performance shootout at Oran Park from memory. Big HP cars trying to do the fastest lap sorting of deal. They are heading down with some customers and their cars so they haven't been able to do anything on the Type 3 last few days. next week they will get the timing side of things done and then it's start time. So fingers crossed by dyno day it will be running and be present. there will be videos of it on the dyno I will make sure of it!!

we will try to take some pics or vid's and post them up.

Just a thought but if the efi is being installed on an engine that has never been started before and the cam has not been broken in, you might want to pull the rockers, pushrods and spark plugs so they can check their triggering and setup the timing properly when they crank the engine to test the efi.
If they crank it a few times too many and your valve train is a little too hard core, you might end up with camshaft damage.

GREAT POINT !!!! flat cam = no fun
1303Steve ·
Hi
Not to mention no oil pressure at start-up.
Steve
dangerous ·
I raised some concerns with Troy and Brennden about oil pressure
and so they have circulated plenty through the system with the plugs out.
The cam and lifters are Troys previous ones from his normally aspirated combo so are run in.
Valve train is not killer,
but does use quality dual springs.
Either way I am hoping the tuners do not start cane'ing the engine unless the running oil pressure is acceptable.
The only 'unknown' is the aluminium case.
All the bearings were mounted,
before the crank and cam were ground on their journals to get exact oil clearance,
so provided the alum case has no porosity, all should be sweet.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
We have cranked the engine over quite a lot pumping oil around checking for leaks etc etc. Troy did it everyday for about 2 weeks after work just making sure everything was all OK. Gauge was registering good pressure so that oil was then dropped out and replaced with the good stuff. cleaned the filters and then did fuel pressure tests for leaks. Found a few minor ones so fixed them and got good pressure on the gauge on the regulator.
Guys at dyno shop are going to have Troy there when the tuning begins incase something could happen. First tune will have low boost(like 5psi) so that Troy can put some K's on it to run it in and make sure all is good. Once it has k's on it back to the dyno to wind the boost up. The other thing is it's not a high redline engine. Prolly set limiter at about 6500rpm from memory of cam specs.
2443TT ·
Not a good idea to crank it without starting it period. The camshaft and cylinder bores get splash lubricated from oil from the crankshaft. This doesnt get effective until RPM is above 1500.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
We pulled the plugs out and rigged up and oil can with a long thin tube to squirt small amounts of oil down into the bores whilst cranking. As for the amount of oil, the dry sump tank holds about 8 litres of oil plus the oil in the lins, cooler etc etc. So all up we put something like 10 odd litres into the engine by removing the lines and filling the cooler and filling oil filter then opening the inline tap on the outlet on the tank to allow oil to flow around. We put nearly 3 litres into sump before filling tank so that there was plenty of oil in there before cranking it over.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Ok this week the rest of the sensors and wiring was completed. they did a power up to see if all sensors etc were sending signal and everything was playing the game. Bingo everything is good to go!! Boost solenoid was mounted up nicely and all checks done. Yesterday they cranked it over to get all the timing marks sorted to get ready for start up. Autronic ECU was updated with the latest software and powered up and configured to the car.
Troy is going to get a ring folder when the car is completed with all the info for the car. It will contain the wiring diagram with all wiring colours and what sensors are where info which could come in handy!! Also it will contain all the tuning settings printed out plus saved on a disc for future reference. So fuel pressures, boost pressures, timing, ignition etc etc will all be saved in the folder incase we are away somewhere and need something changed we have the info to present to a tuner if the need be.
This week they will start the car and firstly check everything over before the car goes on the dyno. So hopefully no leaks of any sort and everything is all AOK then onto the dyno for the run in tune with next to no boost. If all goes to plan this is how it will be turning up to the dyno day next saturday. Once we put some k's on it back to the dyno for full boost and tune. Hopefully this will all happen before Valla. Guys at the dyno are keen to hear just what it sounds like but certainly not as keen as Troy is to actually hear it running after 6 odd years.....
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Car got started today!!! All went well till what looks like the turbo drain is too restrictive and not letting enough oil drain out of turbo back to sump. On the hunt for a scavenge pump to fit in the drain to pull oil out of turbo back to sump.
Have heard of Holley Red/blue fuel pumps being used but they are used to pumping cold fuel not highly aerated red hot oil so unsure of life span and/or drama's associated. Have emailed Albins about the pumps on their website so have to wait and see. If you have any other suggestions speak now as time is of the essence!!!!
Plus this car must go to Valla!!! And running!!! Cause I hate pushing it around LOL
hellbugged ·
send westi a message, he has a pump on his gearbox............and would have a reccomendation anyways
Dasdubber ·
I have a scavenge pump I was going to use on my turbo (brand new) and little custom surge tank. I was going to send it over to Marty Staggs to offset some of the cost of my current engine fabrication over there....but haven't committed to sending it over. I had it organised by Heath here on AVD which was greatly appreciated, but with my turbo being over the gearbox I won't need it. Give me a call (or PM) if you are interested. I'd just want to make back what it cost me, not in for profit of course.
um why not run a larger diameter oil drain from the turbo to the sump?
dangerous ·
The turbo is mounted quite low.
Apparently it is the 'fall' rather than the -8 or -10 line not being big enough.
76bug ·
ok that makes sense, so it would be more of a flow issue rather than restrictive
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Thanks Al for the scavenge pump. Just got home from the dyno trying to work out where to mount it. It will be mounted off the rhs bumper bracket under the car as that is really the only space left that it will fit. Lines will run to it easy enough and then to sump no problems at all. Troy is going home to construct a bracket so when the car arrives home tomorrow night we can get straight onto it. Power supply through a relay that gets power once key is on.
We asked if the car was loud at idle and the answer was a resounding "YES" from the guys that work in the workshop. Bill said "might be an idea to get something to muffle the sound as it sounded like a very angry dak dak". So I guess once it is tuned we'll put the supertrapp on for street use.....
Ahh the joys of creating something out of the ordinary.....
2443TT ·
There's nothing wrong with an angry sounding dak dak! Good call with the diaphram scavange pump too. Hollys wont pump oil till its hot due to the viscosity not allowing the veins in the pump to swing out properly. The only type of pumps that do work well are gear pumps and diaphram. I went through that same series of issues with the oil return on my first turbo engine. Started with -8 and ended up with 3/4".
Apart from the oil return issues I was having I also found out that all of the GT28R turbo's dont infact have an internal oil restrictor as some of the "egg spurts" would tell you. And belive me ive heard it from one of the largest garret distributors in australia... The BB series turbo's are supposed to have an internal oil flow restrictor, but MANY of the turbo's that come into the country are shipped as bolt on replacements for many of the various jap imports around. Eg the GT25R/GT28R/GT28RS/GT2871 are bolt on low mount compatible for all the Nissan SR20DET engines, and the GT30/GT3071 etc are bolt on compatible with all the Nissan RB20/25DET engines. All the nissan engines have a banjo fitting that screws into the engine block that has a flow restrictor designed into it. They dont have a 4-5mm hole like a normal 12mm banjo fitting.
On three occasions ive seen seals blown on turbos and oil leaking into the compressor and exhaust housings because it cant flow down the factory 3/4" pipe fast enough when its cold. Two of these were on jap imports too, because they did away with the factory plumbing and wanted to use fancy speedflo hose and fittings that have a 4mm hole in them, instead of a properly sized restrictor.
The correct size hole is 0.035" and you can make your own restrictor by filling a brass or steel fitting with solder, and then drilling it. I drill the fitting first to about 3/4 of the way through to get a clean metal surface and then fill with normal solder. It wont melt during engine operation as the solder melting point is 375 degrees C. The fitting operates a little bit above oil temp.. perhaps 130 degrees or so.
Having the correct size restrictor solve the oil drain problem completely for me. The oil return on my 2332 turbo engine went to the side of the vw crankcase, not the deep sump. The turbo was still in a low mount position as you can see from the pic in my signature.
Hope that helps...
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Ian will that size restrictor be ok with the turbo Troy is running? It's a T3/4 Hybrid with larger wheels etc etc fitted into it when it was built up. Rated to 500hp by the guy who did the turbo for us.
I'm fairly new into the world of mucking around with turbos so this has been a huge learning curve after doing nothing but N/A motors of all sorts for years. Certainly appreciate the info you give and I research everything you've suggested which has helped us a fair bit in getting this car to where it is. Last night I was reading about restrictors in the feed line to the turbo but the context I was reading it was used on a 400 cu V8 with one hell of a big oil pump with a dry sump set up. I summarised that because of the size and the volume that this pump could pump it needed the restrictor. The Peterson pump Troy has on the engine can pump some serious oil pressure as you'd know and it did cross my mind under the back of the car this arvo whether the pump pressure was too much for the turbo and whether this would in turn blow the seals and we get a rather large smoke screen happening!!
thanks again for the input! Appreciate it!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Wel the drain problem is now solved and no more leaks lol but it looks like the turbo also might have a seal leaking. Fitting a new drain line and scavenge pump made it a whole lot better but it still has oil in the pipe so turbo is now out and getting sent away to be repaired/ rectified.
I'm beginning to think that this car doesn't want to leave the comfort of Troy's garage.........
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy's Type 3 has hit another big hurdle. He just called and told me that the turbo has totally shit itself. After mucking around getting the drain and scavenge pump right he tried it and still oil coming out the pipe. So turbo off means pulling 2/3 of the pipes and stuff in the back off to remove. He did this then Pulled the exhuast housing and the worst was seen. Metal everywhere!! Something has failed even without the turbo being spooled up. Shit you to tears to be honest. He isn't happy at all. Luckily when we designed the oil system all oil goes through the coolers etc then the last thing is through the Shawn geers oil filter before it hits the engine. Pulled the filter off and filings in it. So basically remove all oil system and flush everything. We'll drop the oil and remove the strainer plate and check to see if any has got to the engine at all. Prolly the saving grace is that the engine hasn't been revved or run for very long at all. So a lot of cleaning and flushing then checking everything for any traces. The thing is that the guy who did the turbo was Troy's neighbour who at the time worked for a turbo mob here in Brissy and built it up after hours on the side. Troy moved house and the other guy has moved as well so can't really take any course of action plus he did it over 6 years ago. So sitting in a box in a nice sealed plastic bag isn't good or he just stuffed up.
Fingers crossed the engine is all ok. So yet again no Type 3 for Valla!! So time now for my van to undergo a quick freshen up and get on the road in the next 2 weeks!!
2443TT ·
Dam that sounds pretty serious. I really recommend doing a stipdown and check the engine over just to be on the safe side. You'd be surprised just how much metal a filter does let through. Remember most filters have a bypass valve so they arent necessarily filtering oil at all when its cold due to the viscosity being thicker and it not being able to flow all through the filter.
From personal experience when the cam and the lifters decided to eat eachother in my 2332 turbo engine, having a filter there actually did diddly squat to saving the oil pump and the bearings. Fortunatly the crank was nitrided though even the surface of that was not what it was when it was assembled.
For the cost of a set of bearings, oil and a gasket kit it will be the smartest thing you can do. Especially considering the coin already invested.
pete wood ·
Man, so sorry to hear that, but I think Ian is right. If you are pulling off 2/3s, may as well do everything, rebuild it and know that there is no metal in the motor.

Hi, sounds like dramas but it will all be worth it in the long run. Can you please post some pics of the pump and tank. I got the tanks designed so one fitting was from turbo, one was a breather and one down the bottom was the pickup for the pump.
You can also mount the pump anywhere you want as it can suck oil from anywhere but the breather is so it doesn't suck the oil out of the turbo. It can also run dry and not harm it. Did you end up running water through the turbo or just block it off or run oil through the water galleries?
Thanks
Heath

Will post some pics when i get a chance. Engine is coming out and getting stripped. Troy pulled the turbo apart and found absolutely no evidence of where the metal came from. Everything looked good. So engine is all of a sudden not looking so good. After spending so much money for this to happen is pretty much gut wrenching for Troy. so many thoughts and reasons fly around your head just looking for a reason as to why. One that does spring to mind is the car got started with the oil tap turned off and run for a period of time. We have started the car and run it for approx 30 secs to look at the original turbo issue. Oil tap was turned on before it got started as Troy turned it on while I turned the key. The only other people to have started the car is the guys at the dyno and I'm guessing they'll prolly not own to it anytime soon.
So back to square one stripping the engine and everything out and starting again. We are getting very good at removing and replacing this set up that's for sure.
westi ·
sorry to hear the news,
hopefully it's a small problem, nothing major.
is that an ali pully and ali case,if so ,i think that the problem will only be minor. pully grabbed is my guess.
don't let it get on top of you.head down arse up,before you know it your back on track again.if you know what i mean.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Engine is nearly stripped of all accessories apart from a few oil lines etc. should be out of car and possibly stripped down to see what the hell happened. Stay tuned.....
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Engine stripped down today and thankfully no signs of an internal failure of any sorts. Better to be safe than sorry. Turbo wil be sent away for inspection by the Turbo experts to see if they find something....

soo unreal, long live t3s
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well turbo will be back this week all ready to go. Engine will be back together not too far after. Turbo was checked out and all is ok. Looks like when the turbo was originally built it wasn't cleaned out properly and the oil problem was simply the drain and pressure related. The metal in the housing has been there since day dot but if you didn't pull it apart you could see a thing. Even trying to blow it out with an airline wouldn't have shifted it.
Something so simple and ridiculous all because someone didn't pay enough attention to detail and clean things out properly. As turbo guy said you'll only find it once it has oil pressure and circulation. PITA. Also apon looking at the turbo and the work done to it he says he has seen the exact same turbo on a VL push 440hp on 25 psi.
So some happy news at last and hasn't worked out to be too damm an expensive to check out.
westi ·
so hurry up and put it back together then.
we need some vid's of the baby in action.
i rang you the other day but your phone was of.
i will give you a call again soon,if you have a spot in a marque i will put in for it,
keep us all posted ,can't wait to hear it running.

yeah, i'll be in on a marquee too!......
hurry up boys, not long till Warrick, hanging to see it tuned and out there
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Net alone Troy waiting and working on it for the last 6 odd years to get it to this stage and then me working on it days here and there i can tell you we both are busting our chops to sit in it and go for a drive. Just hearing it idle albeit roughly before we pulled it down I think we both had a smile from ear to ear even though we knew it was coming out and being pulled down.
Westi got your missed call I think the other day when optus network was playing up again....
Damo will see what I can do as far as a marquee spot goes....

Engine is back together and Troy picked it up yesterday. So this week is engine back in car and put the jigsaw puzzle back together. will hopefully have it running inside a week or so. Then back to the dyno for rest of tune.

sweet.hurry up.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
engine is back in the car with manifolds and fan housing already fitted. Injectors and rails mounted up too. Troy has been a busy boy in the last 24 hours!!
Hopefully tomorrow all the exhaust etc will go on followed by re connecting all the oil ines etc etc.Wednesday is a public holiday in Brissy for Ekka so a whole day to do more work. I may be able to get down there and assist in the jigsaw puzzle. He hopes to have it running by this weekend so that means some video will be on the way especially for you Westi!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy picked the turbo up this arvo with all good news. They have tested it and all is AOK. At 50psi oil pressure no leaks and everything is doing as it should. They also did a bit of work on the oil port and drain opening it up a little. the oil slinger scroll in the housing was also opened up a bit too.
So tomorrow will be a big day and Troy is telling me that it will be running tomorrow arvo. If that's the case i might have to make a cross town trip with the video camera.......
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Engine back in and running but oil drain is still an issue even with a scavenge pump. I got Troy to disconnect the oil drain from the scavenge pump and then had it into an oil drain and started it. no oil coming out of the tail pipe!!
engine sounded very tough and no leaks anywhere!! Troy was loooking into re routing the oil drain line and tried it but as soon as it is connected back up to the pump turbo fills up with oil and starts to push it past the seal again after about 2 minutes. this is even with now using the oil gallery that feeds the pressure switch and temp sender for the feed line to the turbo. Scavenge pump may be cavitating? Are the lines too big? Some have said to go bigger than what we already have which doesn't seem to make sense.
Will research some more but all advice will be greatfully taken on board.
westi ·
3/4 line should be what you need.
if you have any smaller this can sometimes cause back pressure ,oil banks up in the line.
the best way around your problem is to restict oil flow to the turbo as it doesn't need that much(i am quessing ball bearing turbo is being used)if you have already done this and you already have 3/4 return to the scavenge pump.then your problem can be fixed quite easily.
it may sound alittle weird but you need to make a sump for the bottom of the turbo that is atleast 500ml to 1L.this will give the turbo oil a chance to leave with no build up of pressure.then put your scavenge pump on the bottom to draw it away.
alot of low mount turbo's in factory cars run this method.
you could even run a few testers with containers to try before you manufacture.
please don't stuff around trying other things as this will work.you have already proved it buy doing the test you had metioned earlier.
tell me what dimensions you need i will send it up in the post.
and hurry up i want to hear this thing in action.
Dasdubber ·
Re. the sump pot Brad refers to above, perhaps measure what capacity the little swirl pot is that Troy got from me when he picked up the pump - may be ideal as this is what Heath had it made for when we purchased the scavenge pumps. If he doesn't want it or is not big enough no probs, I'll grab it off him whenever....but if it works it may worth a try as it already has the AN bungs etc so should be fairly easy to plumb in hopefully!

Make sure the scavenge pump is working.
Polarity correct?

pump is working and polarity is correct. first thing i checked!!
apart from this problem the car sounds the real deal. very cranky like lol. took a mate with me down there yesterday and he was blown away at just the look of the engine net alone when we got it started!!

How can a working pump be worse than gravity?
"Somethin' aint right"
debiasi4 ·
on my green beetle when it was turboed the turbo was mounted behind the rear apron and i had a little sump below with the pump drawing from this it seemed to work well- the only thing i found was i needed the pump mounted low aswell at first i had it higher than the turbo and it started smocking out the exhaust- this may have something todo with the pump as i used a holley blue fuel pump- after i moved it to the same level as the turbo it did many years of work with no problems
thanks adam
Turbo54 ·
Hi Mate, did you get the paperwork with the pump showing you how to set it up from alan? I would also use the little tank I had made. Gravity feed the oil into the tank and draw from that. I used one of the fittings to go to my breather tank so the pump wont suck oil out of the turbo. You can download the specs on the pump from here: http://www.turbowerx.com/Scavenge_Pump/Electric_Scavenge_Pump/Electric_Scavenge_Pump.html
Dasdubber ·
Hey Heath, yep paperwork went with the pump and the little tank.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy has tried a few things tonight testing out flow from turbo and making a make shift sump. Seems to work!!. So now it's a case of measuring and planning stuff to get one made to fit with the room that doesn't really exist under the back in the right spot.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
turbo sump is on it's way. Should be to Troy early next week. Big thanks to Westi for whipping one up to fit in the limited amount of room we have to work with.
Cheers mate!! Troy did say you sounded shite house on the phone! Definately buy you a few beers at Warwick for all your help.

all good.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well just got a phone call from Troy telling me the turbo sump is in place and all is good so far. He also took it for a drive to the end of his cul de sac and back. Clutch feels really good and he can get all gears no problems at all. couldn't really give it a squirt as it doesn't have a proper tune yet but the little bit he could give it in first was super responsive!! Tune won't allow it to rev much over about 2200rpm so trying to accelerate in 2nd was a no go. she started to jerk and pig root a bit but the thing Troy commented on was just how tight the rear end feels with the solids mounts and gearbox braces. There is certainly no movement at all!!!
I could hear the excitement in his voice over the phone net alone my nephew Jacob(who is 4 and VW mad)yelling in the background "daddy just drove the Vee Dub"!!! And then "take me for a drive daddy"!!
I guess someone will sleep well tonight after finally getting a drive of his car albeit a short trip to the end of the street and back for the first time in about 6 odd years......

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Type 3 is booked into the dyno monday 1st september to get the rest of the tuning completed. the only thing that sucks is I'm in New Zealand for the week so I guess I'm switching my phone to international roaming to receive the news of whether all goes to plan or not.....
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Got a call yesterday from Troy to say the car has been delayed a week for tuning to them being really busy. So it has been put off till next tuesday so i will be home from NZ yay!!
i have spotted 4 Vw's since being here and all have been really good. Late split bus restored and looked very neat, Stocko superbug in mint condition, Early 60's beetle in stock form but good nick in one of the country towns on the way to Queenstown and the standout was a late 60's beetle dumped on it's nuts(I'm talking you couldn't roll a coke can under the front end!!) with 356 hubcaps and nice chrome. All the car were spotted in Queenstown which is dominated by late model station wagons with roof racks carrying ski's and snow boards!!

Type 3 has a date with the dyno tomorrow. so hopefully by the end of the week video footage of the noise this thing will make(and hopefully the HP) for all to see.....

Not my style at all - But you have to respect the amount of time and effort that has gone into it. Well done and congrats on not loosing focus 👍👍 I look forward to seeing in the flesh.

went to the dyno today to see whats happening, the turbo scavenge pump has been wired up and the alternator is charging ok. they need to fix up the
charge light as it still stays on. they will be putting it on the dyno between now and friday and the sparky is coming back friday or monday to have a look at the charge light..
doing set up tuning off the dyno before it hits the rollers. checking all sensors to make sure everything is working ok. so far so good, should have the car back early next week and i have a few small oil leaks to fix up before the trip to warwick.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well car is still at the dyno but the progress is positive. Called in there this arvo but tuner was out at a job. Spoke to one of the mechanics who told me that they had it on the dyno this morning early doing some tuning and no real drama's at all. He commented on how loud and angry it sounded(in his Pommy accent) and looked forward to seeing it finished. So another week rolls by and Troy is hoping to get the car back mid next week to fix some minor stuff with the car before Warwick.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well if all the stars and planets align on a blue moon phase then Troy's car may be finished in time. starting to get beyond a joke with the time it is taking to get stuff done. Car has been back at tuners for 2 weeks tomorrow and has been on the dyno for 1.5 hours in that time. Troy wants to pick the car up on Friday and told them to have it ready but the slack attitude is starting to creep back in again. It might be finished by then if all goes well. Not to mention they keep complaining about how loud it is.
Troy doesn't care how loud it is he just wants it running!!!!
westi ·
just tell them if they can't have it ready buy warwick they should realy be thinking about changing there name to millers, as in storage.
you poor bastard.don't you have any big fat biker friends that can go down for a visit.lol.
i hope to see your car finished and reering to go.good luck.

A good cheap sensor replacement is the optic sensor disc and sensor setup from the crane cams CDI ignition. Provided your ecu supports using a dual pulse or ghost pulse as a reference point for 60 deg BTDC it will work a treat.
I considered using a magnetic compufire style disc with an extra magnet glued into it for a reference signal for the new engine but the trigger disc is just too small. Radially mounted trigger discs bolted to the back of the crank pully is how most of the US guys do it, and then at the most you need one single pulse from the distributor to get the engine to be able to run sequential injection and ignition.
Triggering issues are the cause of 99% of custom EFI related startup and tune issues. You can also find that other issues can induce fake errors that can look like triggering issues. Solid core spark plug leads do this, as to non-resistive spark plugs. Two problems so simple to check that pro's will often overlook it.
Hope they sort it all out soon...
matberry ·
2443TT wrote:Solid core spark plug leads do this, as to non-resistive spark plugs. Two problems so simple to check that pro's will often overlook it.
Too true, plug leads can cause so many diagnostic issues for efi. My first set up of the choptop, I spent 8 hrs on dyno trying to sort out why it wouldn't even fire/run, after it was fine in my shop for 20 min of camshaft breakin. Ended up being plug leads.🤓
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy is using 8.8mm top gun leads. Brand new. the ones with the spiral core. Plugs are NGK. Can't remember which ones but they were suitable for what we needed. When I bought them the guy who served me said this is what he supplies to a lot of turbo Porsche owners.
Knowing our luck it prolly would end up being something like what you've mentioned Ian. Troy has said all along that this car doesn't like to co operate with anyone or anything LOL.
matberry ·
Some of those spiral wound flash do dad leads are nonresistive and send out radio interference that confuses sensors or computer.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well good news and bad concering the Type 3. Firstly all problems sorted and all good. Secondly the clutch went out to lunch on the dyno.
Car was running well and on 10 PSI boost they got a few runs in before the clutch started to slip. Engine gets to about 3k RPM and clutch lets go under power. Tuner commented on the amount of torque it produces and was a lil surprised at just how much. It was making 250 odd Hp before clutch started playing up. That is the bit Troy was happy with!! Making 250 odd on 10psi when he wants to run 18-20 means goods things to come perhaps.
In the meantime it could be an engine out exercise this week for a stronger clutch to handle the power. Annoying yes but any progress is better than no progress.
hellbugged ·
👍 Troy must be stoked now...............2500 lb/228mm/four puc disc before the hellnotch would hold.
now back to the shed
66deluxe ·
It's good to see some power figure's but the tuner is a bit slack though having it for so long and only 1.5 hours of work done to it, i bet if it was a tokyo racer it would have been done the first day, their probably scared to believe a dub is capable of so much power. Good luck with the clutch issues.

Even if he can get it so that he can just drive at warwick in the street parade etc for now he would be stoked enough at that. Racing well dunno there. Might just do a couple of drive by's lol
big job to pull engine out especially in a short space of time. Have to basically dismantle the intake and exhaust to remove engine out of the car.

just got a call from Troy as he picked up the car from the dyno. He said it drives great just like a modern car but with the tall 4th gear at 60k's it gets a bit surgy. clutch is definately gonsky as he was in 3rd and going up on of the hills on Kingston Rd and just eased his foot down and it just let go as soon as it boost increases. In the back streets to my Parent's place he turned into one of the longer streets and from lowish RPM in 2nd then slowly accelerated till boost was climbing then push his foot down and it just turned the tryes and broke loose easy as then clutch slip.
so in all he was happy to finally drive it after nearly 7 years of waiting and is currently removing the engine to replace the clutch.

Well new cutch is installed and a big thanks to Jerry at Direct Clutches for quick turn around. Clutch is now a puck set up and has 3000 lb pressure so slippage won't be an issue.
Getting the engine back into the car was an issue. bloody no room and with most stuff hanging or still on motor it was a test of my patience for a while till i had to go then Troy managed to get in by himself by in his words "shaking the shit out of it". Welll it ran great all weekend and it is back home in the comforts of it garage safe and sound.
Troy ran a best of 8.60 at about 85-6MPh from memory.Keep in mind that his car is quite heavy compared to all the gutted beetles he was up against. His car has full interior with the remains of his big stereo and is all steel with all bumpers etc etc. It was his starts that were killing everyone.....
saturday in qualifying he reeled off 3 lights in the 400's and one in the high 500's.
Today in racing he ran a .428, .411, .366(oops) and a .401.
Those efforts got him the most improved trophy this year.
Car will go back to the dyno in the next little while and get the rest of the tune, more boost etc etc.
Then it's off to Willowbank to run some 1/4 mile numbers!!
Dasdubber ·
Great to hear and see it running on the strip finally Troy. Was a pleasure to watch it run.....now I wonder what numbers that engine would run in a gutted beetle 😉

time for some glass guards and NO interior 👍 and how about some carbon fibre bumpers?
Craig Torrens ·
you sure it was getting its 250hp at the track, with a 8.6 and 85mph that doesnt seem right........I'm not questioning the HP, just the relationship with the time.
dangerous ·
The dyno sheet I saw was 246.
Perhaps a little high.
Some turbo engines only spike max power for a short time,
so it is possible.
Hard to say what it weighs, but that mph equates to a pertty good number either way.
The car has a lot of extra stuff on and in it...well over 1000kg would be my guess.
typethreeking ·
i am going to try to take the car this weekend to a public weighbridge to see what she really weighs, i think a few people will be surprised with how heavy the car actually weighs. the car made 246.4hp at the wheels and one of the beetles i ran only had approx 30hp less but only ran .30 faster but with alot less weight anyway i was pleased with the car for the first outing and i didnt break anything.

Good to see and here Troys car over the week-end , getting faster as the event went on .
Many things come into et's like how hard you leave the line , radial street tyre , shift point , revs ,gear box ratio's ,etc
Plus car is set up as a road driving beast not a dragcar .
Craig you better enter text year , Hey !
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Don't think Troy left the line with more than 2800RPM on board the whole weekend. didn't want to break tranny first time out. Left tyres at 40psi as he would rather wheel spin than total hoook up. Not to mention car doesn't have full throttle, final tune with more boost and is a big fat heavy biatch!!( the car not the driver haha)
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy is going to take the car to a weigh bridge to see how heavy it actually is over the weekend if all goes to plan.

in a week or so i will be pulling all the manifolds off, rocker gear out, push rod and the tubes and dangerous is coming up to my place so we can retension the heads now the engine has had some running time and we can fix a few oil leaks from the push rod tubes and reassemble everything. i got the car out on monday as i hasnt moved since warwick and for some reason it is miss firing under any boost, maybe some dead plugs again( i hope ). once its all back together i need to make some changes to the throttle body wheel that the cable pulls on as its only getting 80%. after that is back to the dyno to get the tune finalized as the idle is fairly bad( 2000rpm) which makes it painful to drive at slow speed, maybe a little more boost and see how its goes with the new clutch, hopefully we can get an increase over the 246.4hp it made last time.🤘
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Then we off to Willowbank to run some numbers eh bro??
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Troy booked the car to go back to dyno on the 12th November. Finish off tune and add 5psi more boost plus fix a few minor issues.

SO I TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE ONLY TO FIND THE IDLE COME BACK UP AGAIN AND ONCE AGAIN BREAKING DOWN UNDER BOOST. I HAVE THE CAR GOING BACK TO THE DYNO ON THE 12/11/08 TO SORT THESE PROBLEMS OUT AND INCREASING THE BOOST TO 20PSI(HOPEFULLY MAKING APPROX 300HP). I WILL BE ORDERING A TURBO BEANIE THIS WEEK BUT WILL TAKE 3 WEEKS TO MAKE BUT WILL DROP ENGINE BAY TEMPS DOWN HEAPS. HOPEFULLY AFTER THIS VISIT TO THE SHOP IT WILL BE THE LAST FOR A WHILE...HERES HOPING!!

i have currently got the alternator out of the car being fixed as the charge light was still staying on so hopefully that will fix that little problem. i have also fixed the cable guide on the throttle body as it was only getting about 80 percent throttle so we made so changes so it now get a full 100 percent opening. Off to the dyno next week, cant wait to drive that thing with even more horsepower, should be fun!!!!!

oh well, no luck at the dyno, after the manifolds were reassembled prior to the dyno i couldnt find any 48ida gaskets so i just used master gasket in its place but once on the dyno and under boost it blow the sealer out, so a waste of time and money on that trip so have just finished making my own gaskets out of 1.6mm thick gasket paper which seems to have worked but now i need to reset the idle speed as without the air leak it wont idle. will have to rebook the dyno and try again.
Dasdubber ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well the drama that is the life blood of this car didn't show it's ugly head today. Instead it behaved itslef and made the trip to the Gold Coast nicely and cruised really well on the freeway with temps under 100 degrees oil temp. troy was happy with that and also stoked to get a trophy. Judging was peoples choice with the Top ten cars voted for given the trophies and he was one of them.
Here's a few pics of the Type 3 from today....
So glad we took the quick shade. 30 plus something degrees and ridiculous humidity made it very sticky.
On the freeway on the way home with someone tapping away to some tunes happy with the win....
Trophies from the show...(look at the clown in the reflection lol)
Plaque on trophy.
typethreeking ·
Nice photos mate, going to the dyno tomorrow to hand over some hard earned and to rebook the car once again to get the tune sorted out as she still not right(breaks down under boost) and also to add some more boost to it again, hope those gaskets i made hold up. Once thats done it will be time to fit my new hydraulic handbrake/stage brake which i should have this week sometime. The work never ends, there will always be something else to do...lol

thats ok i have big shoulders, i am currently making up some air intakes to direct air flow straight to the oil cooler above the gearbox. The temp after the run to the gold coast show was between 90- 95 degs and if i gave it a little squirt it jumped straight to 100degs and stayed there, so i am now trying to pull some air from under the car via some great pvc fitting i sourced and see what difference that makes. I have sent brennden a couple of picks, as i trial it before i make it look a bit better. hopefully i can get both sides done over the weekend and take her for a spin and see what the gauge reads.
pete wood ·
Just a quick Qu. Have you found your gearbox bracing has helped a lot? I've got a mate with a late notch and we were talking about a similar mod for his car to help the stiffness of the rear end.
typethreeking ·
yeah i wouldnt put big horsepower through the gearbox without bracing like i have. i have also taken the whole rear housing out and replaced all rubbers with solid aluminum to go along with the gearbox mounts and its really tight now and you feel every engine surge and jurk through the whole car. I will only say i hope he has plenty of time to make it as i takes a fair bit of time and measuring, welding, grinding and the like. If he is planning to drive his car regularly he might want to have someone make some rubber mounts as its not nice to drive around town..
typethreeking ·
well i have bitten the bullet and purchased a laptop so i can try and save some money by tuning the car myself, it has turned out a little harder than i thought as i have no idea on how the program works but i will see if i can talk to a few people to se if they can help me out. the main issue at the moment is it drops onto 3 cylinders at around 8psi and 4500rpm which is really annoying so hopefully we can tune this out so i can head to the track for a run...
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Maybe give Trevor at CES a call tomorrow and see if he wants to have a look at the programme/tune.

Well finally started doing some more work on the car again, i have cut out the old handbrake which wasnt connected anyway and welded in the bracket for the new hydraulic handbrake. I bent up some new brake pipes to suit and had a few flares done at the brake shop while purchasing some fittings. Finally cut through the rear brake line and joined everything up. Bled the system of any air and took for a short test drive and all seems good. I will post some pics soon. Aaron Roberts is coming up on saturday to connect his laptop to see if we can get a connection and try and sort out a few lettle issues. I am wanting to get the car out to willowbank for a few runs and hopefully back to the dyno to up the boost before warwick this year.

Well from what Troy has told me on the phone this arvo it was a frustrating and puzzling day of trying to sort out the runnings of his car. Hopefully he'll get on here and fill us in as I cannot remember all of it.
matberry ·
Aron was there today?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Yeah he was with laptop, gas analyser etc etc and unfortunately problem is "unusual" to say the least and nothing they did made any real difference. Aaron is investigating further this week for some more info...
typethreeking ·
yeah aaron was here yesterday for the whole day sitting in the passenger seat as we drove around the neighbourhood trying all different things. we found it running lean around the 3,500-4,000rpm range so we went in and adjusted the injectors to fatten it up there which showed up as rich on the new log but still was breaking down. after several hours of this we took the plugs out and closed the gaps down thinking maybe boost was affecting the spark which made a small change but still breaking down, the break down is much worse under more throttle and load. we now check the boost settings which were all set correct so we went out again and found the ecu logged the boost pressure at approx 23.5psi but it is set to only 15psi and is able to go over that by 3. Now we made adjustments to the external waste gate and dropped it back as far as it could go, so now it shouldnt make more the maybe 7-10psi but still logged 143kpa or around i think 17-19psi which doesnt make sense. Aaron then disconnected the autronic boost controller making it a full mechanical set up and still logged 143kpa so we are running out of ideas. The only thing left to check is the rising rate fuel reg but that still doesnt explain the boost issue. Aaron is going to see Matt at burleigh on monday to pick his brain on were else to look. Anyone else got any ideas, feel free to comment cause im over it.
dangerous ·
I would say one injector is bogus.
When you richen the whole system it will show rich on that sensor but one injector is still bogus.
Boost i probably just incorrect calibration of the autronic's guage.
2443TT ·
Sounds electrical. I'd be checking earths on the engine to the chassis, battery terminals and power circuits to the computer. Also checking all the sensor wires for throttle, cam angle sensor, and the air and oil temp sensors.
The only reason the ecu will report 23.5psi (full scale I presume) is that either it actually achieved that boost level, or the voltages that the ecu's internal ADC's use to calculate that value were off for some reason. All sensors use a common 5V reference voltage from the ecu, and if something went wrong with the power relating to these sensors it throws the values out for all the sensors.
If it runs fine when idling and driving most of the time but misses and bitches when your on the loud pedal something is moving and a bad connection is causing the ecu to go into an error state. As a result it drops a cylinder for a moment until things return to normal again.
Also, does the fuel map contain approximated fuel deivery values for up to 23.5psi? If it does the faulty sensoring data could simply be causing it to massively over fuel for a moment, which drowns that cylinder out when the electrical glitch hapens. This may be visable on the wideband depending on how long the glitch is occuring for.
typethreeking ·
aaron managed to get into see matt at burleigh yesterday and tryto see whats happenin.he seems to thinkthere is smething wrong with the ignition system. he said if the ignition is giving problems it will always read lean on the o2 sensor. aaron is going to call in there tomorrow with his laptop which has my program on it and matt will look over it and he may be able to see whats wrong otherwise i will have to take the car to him, wil wait and see. if the car goes to him i will get the tune increased to somewhere around 20psi, looking for that 300hp at the wheels would be nice but will have to wait and see.

Had a simmilar problem in my skyline and found just ONE plug wasn't up to the task of about 6-7000 rpm. (or what ever they rev to, my tacho's broke.) Replaced with standard plugs, all good? might not aply here just puttin it out there? And it doesn't really explain the boost issue though.
Cheers Dave!

typethreeking ·
well thanks to all those people putting the mockers on me about breaking my gearbox, cause as it happens it broke tonight on the dyno. Oh joy just another thing to spend money on. We fixed the breaking down issue, it was leaking past the injectors under boost, so we made some changes and all was good. Then matt proceeded to adjust the fuel map which made the car run heaps better and fix the idle. Then we started with the power pulls adjusting as we went. Matt first tried 4th gear but was to tall so selected third gear and at 4100rpm and 14psi we found neutral, there was now only 1st,2nd and 4th gear. There was no noise to hear of over the engine noise, you can still select third gear but theres nothing there. So i will be picking the car up tomorrow and bring it home for the start of the ppull down again, im getting good at it now. Will post up some picks once the box is apart.

It was a good night on the dyno, other than braking the box. This dose happen, i have a mountain of them. Don't look back, just keep moving forward, either new parts or old, as long as it's on the road again soon, thats what i think racing is.
Glad we were able to fix the injector rails and the idle valve in this 3hr session, so only have mixtures to do.
Two steps forward one step back.
I even got to drive it on the dyno, man i have to appreciate that volksy turbo combo, sounds so sweet.
Better luck next time.

well the cars back home, i drove it on and off the trailer and it doesnt sound great but hopefully theres not to much damage. I will start pulling it all out over the weekend and see what i can find. Will let you know once its apart
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
While the box is apart we might call on Mr Albins for some "goodies"......
Hopefully it is what we think it might be Troy after talking to a few today. Hopefully damage is minimual and not too much of an expense to repair.
Positive thing is Matt has done more in 3 odd hours to sort issues out and have the car run soo much better than the countless hours it sat and the tiny amount of time it was on the dyno for the huge bill from the other crowd.
I have to admit when I got the phone call Troy sounded kinda calm considering and was actually sounding positive about how the car was running and that all gremlins were fixed and sorted👍

well the engine and box are out of the car, i have started to pull the box apart, so far it looks like it must striped the splines off the shaft 3rd gear must be on im guessing cause there no big bits yet just all small lengths like splines. i will try to get the rest of the box apart tomorrow and post some pics..

box is apart, third gear has or should i say had the fine tooth gears but they are now all in the bottom of the box. i got together with aaron today and we pulled it all apart and aaron had a 1600 kombi 3rd gear which has the corse tooth that will fit so now the clean up and get in touch with dangerous when he gets home to arrange to get it put back together. dangerous ·
I'm back now dude,
give me a call omorrow after I get some spleep.
dangerous ·
I think troy was very lucky only to have broken the third gear.
While it is apart, I did a few little things to make it as good as it can
be without going the Quaife route,
nor going for Albin gears(yet).
His trans alread had a 4 spider gear super diff fitted in a past life,
but was other wise stock
except for a too-tall 0,821 fourth gear from a late 1600 bus trans.(2550 rpm at 100km/h)
As seen in the picture above,
it stripped the fine tooth third gear.
In its past Troy told me he had the box rebuilt after the mainshaft bearing failed and 4th gear broke.
I think after driving to Valla in third gear with the dead bearing,
the third gear was alo weakened.
I have upgraded to the 1800 bus gears with a 1.26 third,
and 0.889 fourth.(2700 at 100km/h)
These are factory electron beam welded,
and I have used them with as much as 460hp.(for a good time not a long time).
dangerous ·
The first gear in Troy's trans was the later model one,
but to help it some more I have replaced the plastic caged short rollers
with the steel caged ones from an early 40hp trans.
I also machined the 1st/2nd hub to control the end floatof first gear,
and added some oil holes.
Second gear also got a metal caged bearing and end float set on it.
Unfortunately there was some unexpected wear on the teeth of the side gears and spiders,
so I found some good used ones.
dangerous ·
The new side gears were modified on the ends to remove the circlip groove.
I have made up some steel spacers and bolt-on caps to retain the CV flanges.
When the bolts are torqued,
it will help stop the wobble of the flange
that often breaks off the spline, in high torque applications.
dangerous ·
The third gear end float was set,
and then the hub was modified to accept a thicker 2lt bus circlip.
This will stop the hub thrusting forward and burning up the 4th gear
as the end clearance changes.
I used a metal cage on 4th gear too.
This trans had been updated with an 091 mainshaft bearing,
so 4th gear needed to have some oil grooves added to the gear face. (just like 2lt bus).
dangerous ·
This was a 1976 model trans and so it had the strongest "2-rib" side cover:
The final touch was to machine the nose cone flat, and add a steel thrust plate,
to help prevent the mainshaft bearing from thrusting under load.
dangerous ·
For a low budget repair,
this trans should now be as strong as the next week link in the chain.....the CV joints.
The descision was made not to use Albins gears at this time
because troy prefered to wait and buy them to suit a future upgrade with a 2lt bus or Renault trans.
20bkombi ·

Thanks Dave, i'll get the ACE 75, good luck at dyno day, i won't be able to make it i'm out of the country.

Nice work Troy.
Now that it has a trophy time to pull some weight out of it and get ready for the track.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Dangerous throttle response was checked especially getting onto the freeway. Nice of Troy to wait for me too LOL.
Stanley the plan is to run it with full weight as the car sits right now and see what numbers it will achieve. Then start the weight removal.
Let's say that it looks like the Alder's have another long term project commencing in the next couple of months if all goes to plan....
Sides ·
Awesome stuff Troy - congrats !!!
Kinda surprised I'm the first to come up with this... nice car, but who's the blonde ???
😉
typethreeking ·
sorry sides, i wasnt looking at the hair colour!!

I doubt she is a blond.
Cuff and collars probably dont match.
Perhaps the collars have been removed...all good!

im with stanley, forget the orange and white, i will come up wth a colour a some stage but lots to do before then. I will start a new thread soon, i will have the car home here tomorrow so will post so more pics then.

typethreeking ·
well since db gear rebuild everything seems to be going well, i will take the car to the dyno day and to the test and tune after even though the tune still hasnt been done yet but its safe to run, running very much on the rich side, like in the 9s on the air/fuel meter. I will be getting it back to the dyno before warwick to finalize the tune and finally increase the boost.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
So next monday it's off to the dyno to finally get it all sorted. Look forward to the phone call!!!! Hopefully it will behave itself for once.......
vassy66T1 ·
It would be a relief and a nice change ... fingers crossed for you
typethreeking ·
going to the dyno next monday after work to get it tuned and take a few litres of fuel out, after that it probably would still be rich, anyway lets hope no more problems
chunks54 ·
Just read this thread... this car is frickin awesome! Great work on it, hope all goes well at the Dyno.
dangerous ·
So, how much boost dude?
Stanley ·
yeh...c'mon Troy it's Tuesday wheres the info.
Sides ·
Maybe Troy's startin to play the mind games for Warwick already ???
😵
typethreeking ·
ok heres the info you are waiting for, all went well at the dyno, car feels strong and alot better to drive but we couldnt get the power we were hoping for due to the spring in the wastegate only being able to hold 14psi of boost. Car made 208.8hp at 5500rpm and has full boost by 3500rpm and is making 175hp at 3500rpm so it comes on strong early in the rev range. I will be staying with this tune for warwick but will start looking for a heavier spring in the meantime. I will post up my dyno sheet soon..
dangerous ·
With your old HP at the wheels and 2200lbs of weight it matches the 13.66@102.5mph.
With the new 208hp it works out at 12.8 or better@110.5mph
sweet thanks dave, i said i would be happy with a 12 sec pass, lets hope it doesnt break
Stanley ·
forget the heavier spring just get a boost controller. My car used to suffer badly (apart from running out of fuel) from wastegate creep. Fitted a boost controller I bought from ebay and all is good (apart from windows in pistons).
hellbugged ·
yeah, should be happy with that and just enjoy the thing for a while rather than push the boost envelope and be pulling stuff apart yet again with more $$$ invested
should be able to run boost control solenoid through computer anyways?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
It has boost control solenoid but wastegate spring simply gives up the ghost at just under 14psi and opens so no more boost can be built. Matt mucked around with it for about 20 minutes or so and did multiple runs to no avail. Heavier spring on the way!! He also bumped the limiter up to 7000rpm to see how the power curve went. Sounded awesome at that rpm but power dropped off around 6500 so limiter is set there.
Sorry for the pic quality I took them with my phone!! Was hot under the back trust me!!
Anyone for some red hot pipes???
Matt from PITS hard at work...
Stanley ·
I'm colour blind, but those pipes are pink!!!!!!!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Mate trust me they were red hot and glowing LOL Camera phone does funny things you know LOL even makes calls from time to time
Stanley ·
I still say pink but good on ya Troy for sticking with it.
This thing is destined to make good power. Just keep in mind the grand plan and how it will go in the bug.
Us forced induction dudes need to stick together. Don't know about you but i'd rather be blown than stroked.
typethreeking ·
im with stanley, but as for the pipes i think if you touched them you would know they are red hot. I will be sticking with this tune till after warwick as i will need to save another $450 to tune it again after changing the wastegate spring but the main thing is its still together after being punished after about 25 power runs and many high rpm tune changes. Cant wait to drive the tube car with this engine, look out!!!
2443TT ·
Just a suggestion but getting a tougher wastegate spring may not be the best answer. First off it will make the car a handful to drive on the street if boost really comes on hard, and dangerous on a wet road (not that it sees a lot of those though). Getting a simple bleed valve like those $25 ball bleed vales sold on ebay will allow you to bleed boost pressure off the wastegate and easily achieve 20lb boost pressure. As a general rule you can go 1.5* wastgate spring pressure before you encounter issue with boost spiking/stability.
If you want to get something really good, get an Apexi AVCR EBC. They learn your engines operation and have hookups to your TPS, tacho, and road speed sensor. With that data it can work out what gear you are in, so you can then control what boost you want to run in what gear, and also control the rate that boost ramps up from wastegate to max boost. It also allows you to stop wastegate creep and bring boost on earlier. This all helps you to preserve your new tranny when launching the car with less power, maintain traction in 2nd, and then go full power in 3rd and above.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Thanks Ian words of wisdom as usual!! It certainly from what Troy said comes on boost quite early and hard and now pulls like a freight train all the way to the limiter.
dangerous ·
"14psi of boost. Car made 208.8hp at 5500rpm"
I went back through my diaries(1999!!!) to find some info on the heads and cam.
The heads flow 107cfm at .500" lift(about 17 at 25") on the inlet,
and 97 on the exhaust,(at 10").
The cam has 262@.050 with 108 lobe centre and 4 degrees advanced.
The cam is not small and has over .515 lift at the valve,
but the port size is quite limited.
It is interesting that it made nearly double the power at the wheels, than it did normally aspirated.
I guess 14psi is nearly one atmosphere,
so it all makes sense!
Mick058 ·
u gotta be happy with a 12sec pass potential! Well done i reckon. Be good to see this in the bug with less weight!
typethreeking ·
Thanks ian, there is a autronic boost controller in the car but not sure on the operation. Will look into what you said later on but for now i will enjoy driving it for a while i think. Thanks mick for the comments, i took the car for a quick spin yesterday arvo and it drives heaps better, still a bit ruff when its cold but it warms up pretty quick. I love the way the boost comes on so early, makes it interesting to drive through the windy back streets near my place but thats part of the fun!!!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Pete will be calling the authorites about someone "hooning" in his neighbourhood again LOL
Boostn ·
Nice, should be in the 12's.
BUT.........more boost would be even nicer. Don't be scared of breaking it, it's all progress.
Are the pipes stainless?
typethreeking ·
yeah the pipes are stainless, dont worry i will be back to the dyno at a later date to increase the boost
westi ·
and so you should you got nothing.biatch.

i just got to take the type 3 for a drive this afternoon as i havent really had time to drive it since the dyno. It goes so much harder now than what is was and pulls hard all the way to the rev limiter, cant wait for warwick now!!!!!!!

Mick058 ·
be good to see this at Warwick, look forward to it 👍
Turbo54 ·
Cool that you finally have it running well. Sorry for my ignorance but shouldn't it be running a lot more than that. I read about the leaking wastegate etc but with that sized motor and 13psi boost I would expect a lot more. How much more do you think it has in it?
Not putting the project down, I you have got more passion than most of us with were this car has been through.
I would've given up!
T54
dangerous ·
No... no more than that with the cylinder heads it has.
Capacity does not mean power unless the air can get in and back out.
That is a very fast car.(102mph with only 166hp..now 208.8!)
Dont be fooled by internet numbers.
typethreeking ·
yeah thanks dave, cant wait to put some big heads on this sucker and transplant it into the tube car, easy 10s here we come!!! i will get back to the dyno some time after warwick to get more boost and see how it goes but its a bit of a unknown on what it will make with the volksy heads it has but would like to try for 250hp with 20psi.

What heads is it running, ported standards?

had a great weekend, meet a few people from the forum and got to give the fastback heaps of stick without breaking it. I was leaving the line around 4500rpm and traction was the issue with plenty of wheel spin and managed to run a pb of 8.394 @ 85.23mph, 1.983 60ft. The pretty much standard gearbox that dangerous put together stood up to the punishment over the weekend so thanks dave for a good job.
westi ·
the way you drive, a stock 1100 gearbox that dangerous re assembled would be more than enough for you ! as for the pb,must have been the wind.lol
maybe you should get mike waldron to drive for you,his nick name is errol flinn.or dick fingers.but he's fast.

yeah i might look at stripping out the interior to see what weight that takes out
typethreeking ·
well got the other turbo fitted this weekend courtesy of aaron letting me use his old one off a 13b and also dangerous for some machining to fit the exhaust housing. Took it for a run this morning but had to go easy as boost is set much higher now and not tuned for it but far out what a increase in power, cant wait to get to the dyno!!
hellbugged ·
dyno or bust they say 😂
take it easy, get it done❗
typethreeking ·
finally got back to doing some work on the car after sitting for sometime in the garage, moved the car out and decided to take a spin around the block but when i tried to stop i have no brakes, pedal just went to the floor. I have now replaced the master cylinder with a new one and the brakes are the best they have ever been. Now im chasing oil leaks, well the major ones anyway replacing the pushrod seals and some machining done but dangerous and reinstalled to find still leaking just as bad but not from them. Head studs are leaking from the head end so i will be pulling the nuts off one by one and resealing them. GOD I HATE OIL LEAKS. I know they say volkswagons are just marking there spot but soon i will be in as much trouble as BP's oil spill issues...hahaha. Then back to the dyno without covering it in oil like previous visit.
typethreeking ·
after resealing the head studs and letting the sealer cure i started the car the next day and drove on 500mtrs and found it still leaking, looked like from around the barrells. Spoke with dangerous and he said if in doubt rip it out so i did and we found the problem, leaking from case savers and also a crack in the block, check the photos below..

2443TT ·
Man that sucks. Its the reason why I decided to use an oxy boxer case.
I still have an alloy CB alloy case here sitting on the shelf that has a similar issue. I was having some tig welding done on the case to modify the oil control, and parts of the case where the welding was being done were just colapsing with porosity. In the end after the welding was done the porosity was fixed, but it didnt leave me with a lot of confidence in the case.
How are you going to fix this Dave? Tig and then machine the case again?

Yep, sure do Troy, CE do all my case and crank machining work. When I said 'done by the best up this way', I meant done by Crankshaft Engineering, being north of the border. The machining quality is one of the trade offs for the superior strength of the aftermarket cases.
typethreeking ·
the case thats in rod richardsons car is the same but his was really good where mine was rough around the barrells but even with the crack i will run it and see what happens, at least being aluminum i can weld it up later if it gets worse
typethreeking ·
dave and i have sealed everything up as best we can, crack shouldnt be a issue for now so i should have it running again later this week so soon will see if any oil leaks, lets hope

typethreeking, a while back there was a vw trike up the top of the hill at edens landing. last time i drove past recently, it had disappeared. was that yours? Near the water tower. 👍
20bkombi ·
... but which car did the engine go into ???
The engine will stay in the type three until after warwick Troy tells me.
Have you tried the spark plugs yet?
The injectors have a gauze filter in the top aswell.
Hope you find it before you go to the dyno, to save money.Good luck fella!
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Make sure those bloody injector rails are seating properly. You know how much of a mongrel they are to get access to in the car and once you stick your hand in that small space you see nothing....
typethreeking ·
bajachris88, no thats not my trike, i live three streets back from where that trike was. Well looks like a manifold leak was the problem, i sprayed inox around the manifold near the head while it was running and noticed a change straight away so i have removed manifolds, made gaskets and reinstalled them, just have to refit injectors tomorrow and fire it up, hope it behaves it self!!!

sorry about the bad pic, car made 233hp on the first run at 18psi of boost but was to lean, after some more tuning found the problem to be the injectors were to small so had to drop the boost to 16.5psi and made 227.9hp. I took the car for a spin this arvo and still feel pretty quick so i will leave it were its at now.

typethreeking ·
yeah your right alan, the plan is after warwick i will start back on the tube car
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Well I went down to Troy's yesterday arvo and gave the Fasty a going over to get it ready for Valla. Run the buff over the outside then started polishing all the alloy/chrome. Not till you start do you realise how much of the stuff there is in that boot/engine bay!! Car looks great for paint that is 15 plus years old. Few signs of age showing but good none the less. I left Troy to finish off the engine bay with a few minor details to be completed before it gets loaded on a trailer for it's second trip to Valla in the last 12 years!!
First trip was total disaster with a gearbox failure just near Byron Bay. So Troy drove all the way to Valla in 3rd gear with a set of 48IDA's droning in the back with no firewall LOL. Luke Pell to the rescue with another gearbox so a engine out and box swap done in about 4 .5 hours. (engine in and out of this thing is a mission!!) So we got that done then Luke had a bay window auto with no brakes, and no roof that wouldn't start or stop and used the back of my bus as a brake to stop from rolling away down the hill!! During the course of the weekend the car ate 3 oil filters as a pressure relief spring was waay too heavy and kept pumping massive oil pressure and exploding oil filters every time you did a cold start. Then on the sunday before the show and shine we got the car ready and went to start it blew another oil filter with oil everywhere so another major clean up and then it wouldn't go. Holley fuel pump decided it was sleeping in so we had to push it over to the show area. Funnily enough he didn't win best modified type 3 cause we pushed it over there.....
Then on the way home a rocker cover breather hose come loose and started to spray oil all over the exhaust leaving me disappearing in a cloud of fumes. Stop and fixed that then just before Grafton a stupid old moron in a Lancer decied to drive off the road after passing us and showered both of us in rocks so Troy got the dirts and pulled out and passed him to give him a spray and hit a hump in the road at speed (about 130km/hr) and the deep sump bottomed out and tore the sump plate almost off and dumped about 7 litres of oil all over me and the Lancer. guy in Lancer thought we were going to kill him cause he pulled over as we did and locked himself in his car LOL So I towed him to Macca's at Grafton and we rang a mate of Ron Langes(legend) and came down to meet us with a strainer plate kit and we did some rebuilding in the car park to get home. Just as we hit the border Troy lost headlights and drove home in the dark with just parkers.
After that the car sat for quite a few months in disgust with what was a horror weekend for it's first outing to Valla and hence hasn't returned till this one. I did ask Troy if he was going to drive it but his exact words were after last time it's going on a trailer!! So this time the car is very much prepared to go and fingers crossed all bugs and issues have been sorted for a trouble free weekend!!

Brendan ... that would have to rate as one of the worst 'bad luck' trips I have ever heard of. 🙅
Hope this one is an enjoyable and event free one.

On the bright side showering the lancer in oil after what the driver had done with stones probably puts a smile on your face today still!

x2 on both accounts 🙂
The second Valla for the Fasty will DEFINATELY be better than it's first....man what a weekend saga, reckon a few of us have had disaster trips like that, always a good story.

i think i will look for the f*!kwit in the lancer while im down there..haha, part of the trouble last time was new engine only running a few days before going and no test time but this year will be much better. Car hasnt been back to valla for a long time due to the work and money spent on what it is today, took me a long time to pay for that..🤪

Troy would have to agree that him pulling over in front of the Lancer and me being right up his dot pulling over I'm pretty sure he thought he was going to cop a hiding. As for covering him in oil I do remember the idiot putting his wipers on and making it a hell of a lot worse!! Ahh the memories LOL

well another year over at warwick and after the rain stopped it was a good weekend, the fastback ran well and stayed in one piece but failed to better last years time but did better the mph with a 88.5mph, 3mph up on last year. One pass also had my best 60ft with a 1.95 and would of been the quickest et for the car but started breaking down at the top end which only got worse slowing my mph to 83mph. With the extra horsepower traction was the issue with street radial tyres and low pressures but still heaps of wheels spin leaving the line around 4500rpm but happy the gearbox stayed together...now on to the new car...
