Hi guys,
I did a search but what I did find didn't really answer my question.

Now I have a 76 bay and it has a 1600box with an 1800 motor in it. I finally got her started today and found that to engage first the shifter know is under the dash and neutral is just before the dash starts. Is this normal? I had someone tell me that kombis are notorious for being knuckle bashes when changing gears but I thought this is a bit extreme.

Am I better off getting one of those $10 ebay quickshift couplers or something a little more pricey or is it something I can fix with no real cost. Thanks guys and gals

Is there an engine hatch in your 76? If there isnt, then the 1600 is original and you may just need to adjust the shift plate. If it does have a hatch, then it had a 2L gearbox originally, and the gearshift rod at the front of the kombi will be too short for the 1600 box.

No you shouldnt bash your knuckles on the dash. When the car is in neutral, the gearshift lever should be in the middle of the shift plate, and standing vertical....not leaning forwards or backwards.

Is there any way to fix it then besides changing the box?

Yeah, if the problem is the shift rod is too short, you need to weld a piece in, about 15mm should do the trick

So weld 15mm to the actual gear stick or the shift rod underneath?

yeah that would be underneath!!!! the longer the gearstick the further it will travel
have you tried loosening the two bolts and adjusting the shift plate as nuts suggested first??
a quick shift plate should cost less than $10 and id install one anyway 5 min job
try a wrecker for a 2lt shift rod i wouldnt pay more than $15
replace all worn bushes including the front one (often neglected) while your there ....you'll be glad you did
