i just finished bolting some new parts back on the engine and hooked up the battery to the car when the low tension wire from the dizzy to negative on the coil fried!

i checked that the battery terminals were correct,
the low tension wire from dizzy is definately going to negative on coil,
i never changed any other wiring on the car since it has been worked on other than connecting a new earth from the battery to the body and engine.

any ideas will be greatly appriciated,,,,,,,,, because im out of ideas!

Condenser maybe? Points welded shut or LT shorting out through insulation block on dissy? Coil internal failure?

Good luck.

Just had the same thing on my sons baja when we tried to start it up for the first time. Found the low tension wire was pinched to the mounting plate for the coil.

I gave up, ill get an auto sparky to fix it.

All the fuses are good, no wires were pinched or faulty, coil is working, points are new and working, condenser is new and working,

one thing i was unsure about tho, when i replaced LT wire with a large gauge wire, it didnt burn like the two privious dummy thin gauge wire lengths. The car at that point just had no spark coming from the HT from the coil...

ah well, not my problem now haha

Sounds like the coil has shorted out if the larger wire didn't burn. (large wire can carry more current and heat). You should have noticed the coil getting hot though. Have you checked the impedance of the coil? Also when testing remember that the coil only charges when the points are closed. One other thing do you have a rpm gauge fitted if so remove this and test seperately. Had a cheap one short out and catch fire years ago.
