I need some help with how to wire in the wiper motor of the Manx SR.

I needed a better wiper than the orignial VW one, because it does not comply with the ADRs, so I bought and modified a wiper assembly from a Holden Barina. I shortened its frame and modified the levers to get a different sweep from each wiper blade.

The motor has 5 wires. I have identified the following.

Brown------------------earth
Yellow/orange-------slow speed
White -----------------fast speed.
Those three go into the motor.

On the back of the gearbox is a little black box that has the other two wires going into it.

They are, Green and Purple/black

I've looked at a Barina manual and the wires are shown as going from the switch to the motor assembly, but what they do and how they are connected to what, inside the switch, is not shown. The terminals on the switch and the motor and also in the wiring diagram are not numbered.

I know that they control the self parking system, but every combination of connection that I have tried has not worked and I have to be careful not to create short circuits.

Can you help me here?

from my experience with cars, from memory, there is usually a constant 12V to the motor with the ignition on, and the motor assembly has to be earthed, this is to get the parking section working, then the other wires go to the switch, one earths for low speed, and the other for high speed.

but every manufacturer seems to do things differently, especially europeans. if you have a local holden dealer thats got some nice people, they may be able to find a proper wiring diagram that has all of that stuff in it, otherwise, you could try talking to an auto electrician, they often have more in depth wiring diagrams, or they may know off the top of their head.

otherwise you try the same scenario I had helping smeone else with a mazda, I went to my car, armed with a test light, took note of what wires went to earth through a mounting bolt, then unplugged the wiper motor plug, and with a test light probed which colour wire had an earth or power signal on high and low speed. so maybe get yourself a two colour LED test light, and find a same model barina with the wipers intact and working, and probe until you know which wire does what under what conditions.

then, making sure you are using a fused power source, try out your findigns to see if they are indeed correct and you have two speeds and an automatic park.

why does the VW wiper not meet ADR's??

Thanks Rota.

You are right. Not using the VW wiper has nothing to do with the ADRs. It was just going to be too difficult to do it, so I got a Barina one instead.

I hate the bloody ADRs at the moment as I'm having to constantly comply with them and half the time I can see no good reason why newer and ADR compliant is better than older and still good.
