I have a 65 Type 1 and have been wondering if it still has the original engine (Ive been told it has) and if the rego has been the same since it was first registered. Any ideas how I do this?

Last week I was at Vicroads and asked the guy behind the counter to check their records. He told me their records only go back to 1989. However, engine number and rego have not been changed since then.

In regards to the compliance plate, its in German so I assume the car was fabricated in Germany and sent here in boxes to be put together. Anyway, only the chassis number is identified here and matches that set out under the back seat.

Any help would be much appreciated.

After looking at your cars photos i believe it is a full import due to it is fitted with the larger rear window that Australia didn't fit to till the late 67 / 68 beetle plus your windscreen washer button is also something that was not fitted here.
You can also get a birth certificate for your car from Volkswagen Germany , but sorry i don't know how but some one here should be able to give you the details.

OK, thanks. Its a start. Any idea why it would have been fully imported rather than boxed up like other bugs of the same era? Was it a prestige thing given that it was assembled in Germany?

Anyways, I didnt know about those subtle differences. You certainly know youre bugs!

Another thing I noticed that is different is the heater contol, which is controlled by two stalks in the side of drivers and passenger seat, in the centre. Is this unusual?

No the heater controls are just like the rear window that they are correct for your imported car but were not fitted here till 68.
I forgot to mention the other night but your bonnet release is on the oppisit side to aussie cars too but i dought it was ever left hand drive .
