Firstly, anybody got any ideas what IRS gearboxes will fit into an L-bug without modifying the chassis or gearbox? I'm not worried about gear ratios at all... just physical fit.

Secondly, can any McPherson-strut bug steering box be used on a '74 L-Bug or does it have to be from another L-Bug?

And yes, I did the unimaginable and got an L-bug!😵‍💫😀 What can I say? the price was right...😎

Nothing wrong with owning a Beetle Paul... just an L-Beetle! 😀 If you'll recall I'd always held a bent against the bloody things, but then Dave gave me one for free instead of sending it to scrap and since then I appear to have gone soft and embraced them! 🤓😂

Hi

All the strut steering boxes are interchangeable. All the gearboxes are interchangeable as long as the nose cone matches up with front mount. The mounts under the bellhousing can be updated with earlier bug mounts and cradle, this is a good idea as the stock L bug mounts are very soft. The front mount your stuck with using the L bug one.

Nothing wrong with L bugs, its like having a classic car that drives like a modern car.

May the struts be with you, Steve

U wont get any arguments from me or Steve LOL
steve pretty much covered it
u can use Sbug and type 3 boxes if u just change the nose cone over cos of the Lbug mount
and both S and L have identical steering boxes but the drop arms are different
the ealry ones have the lock to lock adjusters on the idler arm and i think starting with Lbug theyre on the steering box drop arm instead
just changing the drop arm is a piece of piss
ive got the brand new box out of my 71 Sbug in my 74L now

ur ready now to come join our other clan mwahahah

hehehe... yeh with the speeds that Joel has pulled in his fatty whilst taking photo's of the speedo and still coming out to tell the tale... I don't think any argument against an L Bugs handling would have a leg to stand on no matter how hard ya tried! 😎

And I totally forgot about SBO... might scuttle over and join later tonight. Ta Joel!
