I have just gotten hold of a late beetle air cleaner (non oil bath variety) for my 72 beetle & I need help with what hoses hook up with the smaller outlets on the bottom of the air cleaner. I presume that the smaller one of the two would be for the oil breather, but what is the larger one for? As it sits at the lowest point of the air cleaner I am thinking it would be a drain or similar, but where does it go to?

Also where do I get the elements from & can anyone give me a part number to quote?

Picture attached.

Thanks
Brendan

the bigger one in the top of the picture is the oil breather
from 73 on they had a bigger 19mm breather hose instead of the old 12mm
so u will need to reduce the hose somehow
the smaller one i think is for the charcoal canister which is only on 75-76 bugs

for the preheat hose does ur bug still have the ducting at the bottom that goes to the head?
if not i wouldnt bother fitting it the fan belt would eat it in no time
also check first if the diaphram is still good
suck on the little 4mm hose ontop of the snout and see if the flap opens and stays open
if it doesnt then installing the preheater hose is pointless anyway

Thanks Joel,

I knew about the preheater & the vacumm diaphragm etc. & I was going to attach breather to the larger tube just because it is the lowest point & would drain any oil that may accumulate in the bottom of the air cleaner back to the engine but just wanted to make sure it wasnt for something else. The smaller one I will block off by the sounds of things.
Any ideas on part number for air cleaner element?

Cheers
Brendan

Thanks Barry,
So you reckon K&N is the go rather than a throw away? It the first time Ive really had this option. (oil bath up till now).

Cheers
