My first Beetle I got as a trade for some work I did, it was my best friends but had run out of rego, a yellow convertible baja - we called it porky and for a while it had PORKY plates. More than 10 years past before I needed another vw, I payed $350 for a rusting unrego'd 1974 type 3 from Manly and drove it to Wollongong it was to be the car I'd always wanted to rebuild..... BUT THEN, while the $350 bomb was gutted a workmate called me and said his mates dad was clearing out the shed and there was a type 3 I might want as parts, I needed a trailer (it was stuck in 2nd) Without seeing it I decided I'd take it (they only wanted a case of beer), turned out to be a '68, the nice rounded bonnet, very little rust. Soon after I got it I lost my job and spent the next 9 months giving it all the love it needed to get it on the road again.

Was looking at a notch back at the time when my mate had a phone call from a guy who knew of a 21 window Samba for sale. It had just arrived in Town from California and the engine had seized. The guy who was selling it was going through a divorce so couldn't be bothered sorting it out so sold it to me for half price. Mind you it needed some work doin on it. All the rust was hidden with filler so yuo couldn't really see what lay beneath the paint, the sills, inner and outers where completley gone, other work needed to be done too. Its all solid now and almost ready for paint. Has taken me 5 years so far to put it right.

Well mine was interesting. I am living here in Singapore atm.
I was surfing the web and came across this one in Sydney. I talked to the owner on the phone and Hans Klaack looked over it - the rest is history as they say. So essentially I bought it sight unseen from singapore over the net! Just love it! 😉 so now it is sitting covered up and gets used for holidays, quick rip down to Wollongong - via the bendy bits.👍

I was looking at a golf for my wife at a car yard, and my type 3 happened to be sitting up the back behind their workshop and I asked if it was for sale, and next thing you know it's in my driveway...

I found my '56 Oval accidentally .. I was on the way to check the post, a few weeks after the hail storm that hit Sydney Surry Hills - Alexandria 'bout 6 years ago .. At the side of the road was this beaten up knocked about Oval, it had a For Sale sign on it .. I rang up and they were asking $1500 I said I would'nt give you any more than $300 for it .. She said OK. So I went to the teller machine!

I bought my 68 Bug recently from a local council, which had impounded it as it was abandoned. The second one, a 72 Bug, I bought from an AVD member just to use as a parts car for the first, which is to be my daughter's, but it was too good to wreck, so it will be restored. Both need lots of work, but I'll have lots of fun doing it.

Ebay for mine. At least, that's where I first saw her, and then made contact with the seller and bought it privately before the ebay auction ended. Beat another lady to it by about 5 mins - she'd driven down to the Goldy to look at it from Brisbane as well, and was not happy to see me with a stupid grin on my face.

First Kombi we ever looked at too. Happy days. 😀

Found my Beetle in the trading post. I had no idea about VWs or cars then, but learnt a lot from owning it (and from here). Scotty (Mowog) above now owns it. (How's progress Scotty?)

The Golf was also in the trading post - the ad just seemed to stand out, proclaiming that it was 'almost perfect' which it was. It was really love at first sight when I saw the cute front grill/headlights, and it was soo clean (still is). Got lucky I guess. It was the first car I looked at after deciding the Beetle needed a rest, and after more than a year of searching through the classifieds.

I was looking for a cheap jap-mobile as my first car when my grandfather came to me and my brother and said "for you (me) i have a convertible beetle in british racing green and for you (my brother) i have a cadillac eldorado biarritz..$5,000 for both!"
Best deal out, my brothers working on the cadillac in the hope of selling it for at least $10,000 and im sorting out the bug for a daily driver!

First one was actually my dads' - he bought it the day I was born (he had it ordered, and it turned up the same day as I did - 28-5-57).

He always had beetles while I was a kid, and when I was about 6 months off getting my licence, he came across a '59 that an old lady was selling for $300. I had it for about 18 months before a so-called mate of mine ran it off the road and wrote it off.

I then bought a second hand '69 at our local VW garage. I had it for several years before going to sleep while driving (I was running in a re-built engine, and was travelling at 80km/hr on the highway - how dull).

I wanted another '69 or similar, so helped a mate of mine work on his house in Newcastle for a few days, and looked around, but couldn't find what I wanted. I got a plane from Williamtown to sydney, and a cab to the start of Parramatta Rd, just with the clothes on my back and a blank cheque from my dad. I walked along Parramatta Rd. and after a few kms, there was a gold '69 that i just loved. I drove it for several years untill I dropped a valve at 140km/hr (before 100km/hr limits) and stuffed the engine. I wanted to do a complete body off the pan re-build as a baja. My girlfriend helped me dismantle it, but then wouldn't let me spend money on it. Well, then we got engaged, then married, then had kids, then grandkids, and, if i out-live her, i hope to continue the re-build. lol.

When our local VW club started, she got interested in VWs, and thought a bug would be OK, as long as it was a late model one. After quite a bit of searching, we had to fight 2 other people to buy the '75L bug that we have now (we got it because the bloke selling it wanted it to go to a good home, and as we were VW people and in the VW club, we got it). She loved it for a number of years, but later upgraded to a VR6 Mk3 golf, and i got the '75.

She has now sold the golf and has a 2005 V5 bora - damn nice car, but boring compared to the bug I reckon.
From your ole' mate Jeff

i got given a 71 super by a lady at the end of my street when i was 16, started to get interested in it, thought about doing a german look but it was too rusty to bother, then i was looking for a notchback when i saw an ad in the trading post for a baja, the guy didnt know much about the car at all, he thought it was a 68, engine was way out of tune, wiring a complete mess body was really dinged up, but he had receipts for a recent engine build and the car was pretty much rust free, gave him a deposit and bought it the next day, owes me a lot of money now but ill never sell it so im not concerned.

back in the uk i knew about my 54' oval for two years before i bought it in 1988,an old guy had it sitting on his driveway forever rotting away,he would not sell it.

i just pestered him for forever about it,especially after he told me the back ground of the car, it had been campaigned through the 60's & 70's as a rally car,so it had had a tough life.
turns out the old guy was one of the mechanics for the rally cross team, when they had done with the car around late 78' he bought it & re -road registered & drove it for a few years, the car had stayed static on the old guys drive from 1981 on....
it was a strange mix of all years panels & lights..🤪

note the 'tits' on the engine lid, these were to give the porsche super 90 carbs linkage clearance, note the very large air intakes welded on behind the rear quater windows..
as for rust?..this was the uk,both pans were shot, heater channels, basically the whole bottom 6 inches of the car all round
plus the block was seized tight.

persistance & hard work pays...a ten year resto (when funds allowed followed)all done by myself apart from the box which was built in california.
the car was imported into australia in early 2006....
the rest is as as they say ....history...😎

I'd owned dubs since I was 17, my sister would have been 7 at the time. I customised it so everyone knew whose car it was (you really didn't see many customised dubs at the time) and ued to pick her up from school. So anyway she always knew I loved my VWs and so did she. When she grew up she became a model and eventually went to live in California and she always said she wanted to get me a proper convertible. When she saw it she had to have it and owned it for about 5 years over there before shipping it to Oz where I now lived. She needed a 4 door car when she had a baby so my dad bought her a little Toyota and the cab came to me. Whenever she comes to my house she always says hello to the car before she does to me🤪

I have just got my 2nd beetle. My first car as a teenager was a 1971 1500 beetle which I loved but when on a budget and needing to do big kays (and inexperienced with maintenance myself) I sold it and got a more modern verhicle. Years later I bought a 1975 Kombi camper which I loved but again had to sell as work was taking me on the road upwards of 1000kms a week and the poor old kombi was just not up to it. Now I don't need a work vehicle and have some disposable income so I just purchased a 1973 1303 Bug. Stoked. My wife originally was going to buy it for me as a surprise, I believe she found it on Ebay, but to be sure it was what I wanted she let me in on the secret. We travelled over to Victoria (from NW coast tasmania) on Good friday having only talked on phone to the owner, arrived in Tatura, looked, fell in love and drove it down to the boat Easter Saturday! Now the fun begins!
