Hey knowledgable dubbers. I am currently getting my squareback on the road and am in a big debate with what engine would suit me best as a every day runner. I have a 1835 out of my fastback with a mild cam which im not completly happy with as it idles quite high and uses more fuel than my kombi. It has however great power. I was talk to my local VW specialist and he commented that the 1835's run to hot in type 3's and said that i'd be much happier with a reco fully balanced 1600. I feel that this would be a good move when it comes to fuel economy and smoothness but am worried about the power loss. If anyone has any view on this id love to hear them. Maybe the 1835 needs tuning, not sure what to expect as have only had stock 1600 kombis before this. what fuel economy should you get to a tank of fuel with this type of setup. Was thinking to replace the mild cam with something smaller? cool

i think at the end of the day it all depends what you want out of the engine. i'm sure there will be an alternative where you can get power and reliability.
so you have to decide: do you want more power or more original?

it was put to me a while ago when it comes to engines there are 3 factors,

Reliable
Cheap
Powerful

of those 3 factors you can only have 2.

so it's just up to you what you want and then going from there.

Maybe get your 1835 sorted; it shouldn't be too bad on fuel if everything is a-okay and will cost you less than yet another engine...

'too hot'... Stan Pobjoy used to tow his open-wheeler all round NSW etc with a 1916cc Type 3 wagon loaded with jacks, tyre, clothes and fuel; it never seemed to run 'too hot'

mmmm so many options. Maybe going subaru wouldnt be a bad idea if I could do it for under $2500. Did get a price on a ej22 with harness and computer for $900. Then what, adapter kit $600, enginerring cert $500 ish. radiator set up ???, exuast ????, what else ????. I like the subaru option, good fuel with the power, but alot of stuffin around and unknown problems around the corner? mmmmm

$2500 buy's a lot of petrol........
I'm very happy with my stock 1600TP ('71 auto fasty).
Happily cruses at 120kph, and easily returns ~10.5km/l highway, ~9km/L city.
Cheap, very reliable and an excellent all rounder.

Down side, don't be in a hurry! Combined with the auto it does nothing quickly. The up side for me is when I jump out of hte kombi, and into the fasty it seems quick to me 🙂. It's slower then my '73 L bug also.
👍
