My KG has a real appetite for clutch cables!
1-2 years only
ALWAYS at the pedal end: a few strands let go at the crimp, then it stretches & ist kaput!
Running a 1600TP coupled to a 1500 beetle swing arm trans.
Any ideas?

perhaps the internal clutch tube has come loose inside the tunnel and need a spot of weld
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

yes as per above tehre are many other things that can affect this

does the clutch shudder on take off, how are your gearbox mounts, have u replace the outer reartube all the time, is there plenty of grease around the cable, are the clutch fork arm and bearings good, is the clutch lever arm fitted the right way around on the gearbox

lots of things to check

All things mentioned checked OK.

Bad batch? Look, there may be something in this. The one I just put feels good. The two previous ones didn't. You could feel it dragging a bit thru the pedal.
The one I put in was a Danish one but I can't recall the heritage of the others. Time will tell.

Does the outer cable REALLY need replacing? I replaced it about 12 month ago because it had a small split & this am when I did the job it was still new!

Two nice things:
1. I'm getting good at it! Only took me a bit over an hour! One man op too: if someone in the future rips open the tunnel they are going to find a shiteload of Australia Post rubber bands in there! I use them to hold the cable end on the hook so it doesn't jump off during assembly.
2. I'm REAL good at detecting them breaking & getting home in time.

Sounds to me like the 'hook' is grabbing your clutch cable loop and it is fatiguing the strands of the cable; make sure the loop moves freely on the hook through the full range of clucteh pedal movement. Old age (or a welded repair) makes them bind

VWCOOL: Are you saying it has to do with the profile of the hook? ie it hooks the loop & bends it rather than pull it because the loop catches on some "proud" metal?? NOW we're getting warm I think! Very good observation. If that were happening the stress point would be where the bowden cable enters the crimp, & that's exactly where they break!
HMM! I might have a browse at some spare pedal sets & look at the hooks.
Methinks sometimes we need to to ponder that as ours cars are nearing half a century old & things that you thought could never wear out maybe have!
