You do that with WD40 when looking for an inlet manifold or carburetor leak..
Best to take the top of the fuel pump off...
if it has screws around it. later pumps are sealed..
check the rubber diaphram inside to see if it leaking into the engine..
Firstly pull the dipstick out and see if it smells like petrol..
If it is... drain oil/petrol don't start engine...
change oil.. change pump
If You are having fuel problems..
pull the hose off the carburetor
and place it in a glass jar etc..
and get someone to turn the engine over with the key.
it should pump fuel out the hose...
the engine will actually start as there should be fuel in the bowl of the carburetor.. and go for a couple of minutes..
there is a fuel filter [gauge] in early type fuel pumps
plus one in the bottom of the fuel tank..
put a clear fuel filter under the tank or above the LHS rear wheel where the fuel pipe comes out the chassis..
best not to have one in the engine bay..
it can start a VW fire...
and always carry at least one fire extinguisher..
