All the talk about this 'fastest kombi' competition has got me thinking, what sort of $$$ does it actually cost to build a decently hot NA motor of under 2L? what is the best, building a kombi engine or an upright 1916 or similar?can a hot motor be built or bought for say 5-6k?

You'd do a type 1 cheaper than a type 4. A good quality rebuild on a type 4 would set you back at least 7k using new parts. But if you can do it yourslef it may be a tad cheaper. Modified 2.0L type would also be under a lot less stress than say a 1916.

hadn't thought of it that way, is it possible to build a heavyweight type4 without going over 2L capacity though?

Mate a nicely worked 2.0 will push your bus along very easily indeed. Mine is 2056cc and runs to 6000rpm. It is super reliable and I got 463 000kms out of it before I broke it. Lets just say I am a lot more sympathetic towards the machinery these days....
