What does it take to install a quaife 'LSD' into an IRS box

If you are building one already, is there much extra work in the addition of a quaife, or would it take a similar amount of time if you where starting from scratch on the whole box?

I know they are expensive. By all accounts they are very good.....

Anyone running them out there, I have done a search and not found much on them in Aus

pretty popular in the states.

Hi Dave. I know you'll jump in here. Thanks in advance.

I'm running one in my IRS box, and have to say I love it !!!

👍

It's tough to explain the complete change in the car, but best example is with the hillclimb track where I mostly run I'd been getting massive amounts of wheelspin coming out of a hairpin, and felt like I was sitting there for AGES with the inside rear spinning. With the Quaife in it's virtually eliminated that - most times through I get no spin at all, while if I'm really up it there's maybe a fraction of a second before the Quaife takes up. It adds only a very small amount of understeer to the car - can only tell since I had slight oversteer beforehand, now it's bang on neutral. Driving reasonably sensibly on the road you wouldn't even know it was in there.

A few of the other hillclimbers run them also - I guess don't hear much about them cos you buy one and it just works.... the only time I've heard about ZF's is when someone breaks one, that plus since they're no longer made there's more people looking for them.

Dangerous built my box, and am sure he'll have something to say about setting them up compared to a normal diff. The one trick that I know of is to make sure you get the one that uses Kombi CV's since they're a lot stronger on the shafts.

Hi

I had one in my 1302, I had the small output shafts and I broke one, my fault, I thought I was in the water burnout area. I agree you wouldnt know its there unless you need it. Henry did my box.

You will want the version with the 37 spline outputs,
that suit bus flanges.

This will require a different seal,
but it is available from any bearing shop.

The new bearings are the same as beetle's taper bearings,
but preload and backlash should be checked and adjusted if required,
by using shims that go under the bearing cups in the side covers.

Some people just swap the old bearings and crownwheel over and may get lucky,
but I dont leave anything to chance.
Check and adjust this before fitting the new seals.
