Having spent untold sums of money, countless hours on elbow grease, bruised knuckles, swearing and tools ending up in neighbours yard. I can finally appreciate when the car finally purrs into life.....here is a short clip i uploaded to Utube of my precious project finally giving me some recognition for all that hard work....ITS ALIVE !
Cheers - thanks Nick
Its a homage to all the VW fanatics going thru a resto project - there is light at the end of the tunnel !
Oh yeah, the deck-lid is not original for that model, but being a semi-auto (as they run hotter), i thought
it would be long-life preservation feature. Believe me , the rain guard was hard to track down....

well done once again daniel 😂
Thanks Jess - as you can tell I adore my little bug, and the work has paid off.
I am keen as ever to go cruzing with it. Incidentally, i live on the north-side of Brisbane,
anyone you would recommend who has a bug-fetish and does roadworthies ?

Very nice Mate. I had one exactly like it few years back. Till an idiot on a Harley slammed in the side of it and created a big dent in the quarter panel and the roof. Was a right off because of the value of the repairs
Not too many of them left because they have been sacrificed for their floor pans
Raf
good to see another semi-auto going ,btw i have one of those rain guards and decklid in my shed off my baja , one day i might fix it up for the 69 semi i have👍
Thanks everyone for the kind words and inspiration. Its good to see that everyone still has a soft spot for the good old semi-autos. And yes
i will avoid the fence at all costs CTEFEH...hahaha....and Rammstein "DU HAST" was going to be my second choice for the music....to my dear cous,
at least it was constructive, rather than destructive.....but that depends on how long the noisy tranny holds out ! Maybe a joint project next time ?

no such thing as a 76 superbug
supers stopped in 75
if it is a 76 it would be one of the bastard standard badgeless bugs they were the only bug sold in 76
ive seen ppl calling them superbugs cos of the 1600 engine
most ppl threw the rain gaurds out cos its a case of shitting in ur own nest
yeah they kept the rain out but at the same time killed alot of the air flow the vents were put there for
bit of water doesnt hurt anything if it does u got problems
it is refreshing tho to see a tidy semi auto
most ppl just dont perservere with them anymore
theyve been called sorts of offensive nicknames over the years cos there a nightmare for parts when they give problems and the performance and fuel economy of them sux
my old bug was one b4 it was converted and my best mate had 2 as well
yep, thats correct. Its a '76 standard. the fact its badge-less makes it a dead giveaway. IMHO the best Bug made. The fact its currently in a tired condition, so its nowhere near as handsome as the semi-auto ! One day, it too, will get the elbow grease treatment ...(i think i just heard my wife cringe....!)....oh well, you can only have one wife, but you can't have enuff VWs...!

Hey Daniel ... loved the clip ... and loved the look of your beetle ... well done and congratulations ... would love to see more pix - esp the interior ... how do you find the semi auto to drive (how does it work, what exactly does "semi auto" mean?) ... and are servicing and parts hard to come by for the semi autos ..
anyway ... a top beetle ... you deserve to feel very proud of that one ..
regards
A|T
theyre exactly that -semi auto, half auto half manual
basically a manual gearbox with no first gear and the clutch is vacuum operated soon as u put ur hand on the gearstick and they run a torque converter similar to a regular auto
they were a brilliant gearbox back in the day but they didnt sell in huge numbers here and parts are getting very hard to get
ive driven a few of them
the 1500s are pretty slack on accelaration if ur driving in city traffic, whilst no clutch is great in peak hour u really chew thro the juice keeping up with modern cars
1600 Lbug and superbug semi autos are marginally better tho
make sure the handbrakes work well in 1500s
vw never fitted a Park position till superbugs started so u cant use the gears to hold the car still
I am working on the interior this weekend - just got delivery of TMI black-weave seat covers. Got the carpet too. Probably need the best part of 2 - 3 days to do the job.
Thanks Joel for putting in the facts and info, couldn't have put it better myself. As far as the semi-auto goes, it is uniquely different to a manual car.
Its the first one i have ever owned. Other than driving backwards and forwards in my backyard, i haven't driven it on the open road yet.
It is very smooth, but not as 'punchy' as a manual bug.
The transmission is a little bit noisy (as one would expect from a well worn and aged car), but for most semi-auto owners out there it is always wise
to own several spares as a matter of precaution. Some seals can still be purchased (from USA), but not everything. rebuilding an entire tranny would
be damn near impossible, especially if you are after bearings - hence the reason to have plenty of second-hand ones at your disposal.
I only own one spare, condition unknown. So while the one in the car still works (though noisy), its staying there until it eventually dies an eventful death.
you'll probably find most semi-auto owners out there are more or less in the same boat .
Hey, thanks for the kind words, yes, i am proud of her, and if ur floating around the next couple of QLD shows (14 sep Regents PArk) and Warwick, you probably
get to see her in the flesh !
cheers - Daniel
