Hey All, Im just after some advice on cleaning up my type III engine while its still in the car.
Ive removed all the tins, carbs, coil, genny etc etc, so I have the inlet manifolds still on there but little else.
I dont really want to get a pressure washer in there for fear of getting water in the engine through the manifolds.
Any ideas on how I can get the best results without taking the engine out? I bet its just a case of spray cleaner and careful rinsing?
cheers!

stuff some rag in the inlet ports that will stop the water
and if your worried spin it over on the starter without any spary plugs in that will blow any residual water out

nuthing beats spary degrease and a good scrubbing brush and an old knife or screw driver
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

If you have a compressor with a bit of grunt a kero gun works really well.

all i would do is chuck some plastic bags over the intakes with rubber bands around them and also one over the case breather then get some spray on degreaser and let it soak for a few mins then pressure clean it off

i get the export stuff at cheapskate auto its $2 a can and just pressure clean it off
at worst i may have to do it twice
ive never tried it on my vws but i do it each service on my daily shitters cos they travel alot of dirt roads

but as u can see it works a treat even on thick heavy grease if u can get the pressure cleaner at it

i have a super boring weekend coming up and thought i might give the engine a clean with some degreaser or kero as you guys are talking about in other threads... can someone show me which parts of the engine to wrap up in plastic bags to prevent from getting wet when cleaning. i will probably use some sort of high pressure hose thingo to gegt it nice and clean also. help!
