Hi to all.
My first post here after being a member for some time.
I have a nice 1969 IRS bug, 1776 with webbers etc. For me it is great I love it.

I have a problem with the shaft / keyway on my alternator. It is pretty chopped out and the pulley now hits the end cap of the alternator. I would like to fix this problem and wondered what was involved in pulling this out.

Also I would like some opinions on the nice pulley / tensioners that I see on many engines. Are these easy enough to install or is this a big hassle? Thanks for your ideas and have a great new year. Terry

are you using an after market chrome pully if so these were renound for being a loose fit go back to origional inner pully still using the pretty outer and buy a new key this will do away with much of the freeplay
if its a stock replace the inner pully half and do the same with a larger key and file it to suit
good luch

If the shaft is lunched as you described, you will need to either repair or replace this first...usually replace is easiest.

Nongenuine pulley's have always been a problem, I'd say thats why the new tensioner style is so popular, but to fit these, you'll need to remove/refit crankshaft pulley which would be the most difficult part to the job, the rest is easy.

Dig round and try and get an original German pulley

It is unlikely that the key way on the shaft is screwed
If it is you may have to change the alternator??

As said - the brazilian/mexican pulleys are absolute rubbish

Thanks for those replies - I will see what I can find in the way of German pulley.
Looking at the keyway - this does seem to be a bit sloppy however with a new pulley and key should be ok.

Cheers Terry
