hi, are shims or seats usually used under dual springs to save the spring from wearing the aluminium case. i think i have comp eliminator heads with 46/38 valves, k800 dual springs, titanium retainers, web 86b cam. also does anyone know what the spring rate tension is on these heads. i have 13,15, 17,17 thou side clearance on the scat rods, from what i have reead this is ok, what do u think?. appreciate all advice and ideas. regards grogy

the factory manual says .006" side play ?

.017 " sounds like rather a lot even for Scat

17 is high, but acceptable.
I set mine up at .010" originally....and use .020 as a wear limit on old parts.
I have done cankshaft work on V8 strokers that had 3mm(!)
and so long as the piston did not hit the side of the rod's 'small end' all worked well.

More important is the oil clearance on the diameter of the journals.

I would not assemble any springs without at least a .015 shim in there.
But in some cases there is simply not enough room too allow the distance to coil bind.

I am not aware of what spring tension that they come with(CB CE's),
but would make sure that I had around 1.5mm from spring bind,
and less than 430 nose pressure at full lift (actual not theoretical).

Titanium valves could use much less spring tension than this,
but I have found with anything more than that tension that lobe wear can be high.

Your cam will need to be run in with just the outer springs,
although I see CB claims with their cam and lifters it is unnecc.
I would not risk it though.
