they are very rare..
as they were usually taken out and thrown into the trash
at the first service... in Aust and the USA..

the local VW mechanics were told to do this by the Aust & US VW distributors...
they reckoned We didn't need them...

a local VW trained mechanic said He used to adjust the thermostat so they never closed....
I bought a new mexican thermostat to fit...
had it all ready to fit... then took the fan housing off...
and haven't found the rod since...??

I have an original thermostat & rod, but I give up trying to put the rod thru...??

the flap assemblies arent to hard to come across, a fair few engines still have them in but a working thermostat is the fun part to find
i always grab working ones when i see them
altho the NOS one in my Lbug for $10 i know was a one off

i run them in nearly all my engines cos even in a warm place like northern NSW its amazing the difference it makes to the cars running and economy especially around town

even i made the mistake of throwing them out on the first engine i put together. i was 15 and didnt know any different but have since learned thats a stupid thing to do despite what everyones said in the past
those germans wouldnt have put them in if they werent necessary

Lee was the mexican stat one of these wax filled ones?
most ppl warn against using them as they are just watercooled thermostats which fail (frequently) in the closed position and have ruined a few engines in the process
theres a few on thesamba which this has happened to
