Hey everyone,
Got some adjustable spring plates to throw on the buggy!! It's a type 1 swing axle rear end.
Because the thickness at the torsion bar end is essentially double thickness (the 2 plates for the sissor action to allow height change), Is there a differnt cover plate and/or different rubbers required???
As it was a nightmare trying to get the cover plate back on with my stock parts and my existing rubbers (that were only 12months old!!). And the suspension seems supper stiff as if the rubbers are now packed in there sooooooo tight that they won't alllow much movement and squeeze (yes i greased the shit out of everything!!).
And one have experience with this gear!!!????

maybe early Super beetle bits will do the job

The adj spring plates should have spacers that fit under the torsion cap to allow for the extra thickness, also longer bolts are required.

Marty,
As with a lot of stuff you can buy, not all the required components or sometimes ill fitting components are supplied. You may even find that the inner torsion bar rubber bush / grommet will not easily fit onto the spring plate (spring plate boss diameter will be larger than standard. You can probably get away with a series of washers to make up for the spacers, but the bushes may require some "customisation" to get to fit.

The inner bush is available in urethane, I think Rod Penrose may have em, the spacers are about 10mm thick so you'll need a lot of washers, better to get a machine shop to knock some up. I can measure accurately if req'd.

Thanks for the advice everyone!!!! Pulled it apart last wkend and modified the outer rubber bush to increase it's internal diameter so it didn't bind to the spring plate!! And put some spacers in behind the cover plate.
Now she bounces up and down like a .......... (insert dirty thought here!!)
Thanks again,

who else sells the adjustable spring plates as rods ran out and wont be getting any for about 6-8 weeks??
marty what did you end up using for spacers?
Chris,
I got mine from george at Classic Veedub. So maybe give him a call and see if he has any left. i think he likes to carry one pair.
In the end i used some galvanised washers. 2 on each bolt between the cover plate and spring plate. I didn't need that big'a space because my cover plate had been 'modified' (aka bent in the corners) from my previous attempt. Only really need to space our the thickness of the second plate which is about ~3mm.
Others may disagree, but this approach worked a treat for me. What does everyone reckon??????????

mmmmmm george, not the biggest fan of him, screwed me around a couple of times.
how much does he sell them for marty???
Sorry Chris i'm not sure. When i grabbed mine i wasn't aware that Rod stocked them and i was looking on the american website bugsandbuggies.com and they were a great price when the aussie dollar was nearly on par with the yanks. But it went south, so i looked south. Postage was also gonna kill me 'cause of the weight!!
Was at Georges and just saw them, they were the right fit and good price (as he must have got them with the dollar good) so it was a bit of an impulse thing.
See how you go mate!!!
