i was wondering is anybody had pics of ther external oil cooler setups
(i am looking at running an external oil cooler running from an orig oil cooler) ( top outlet of a type 3 oil cooler)
also does anyone know exactly how much oil it take to fill a 1800 type 3 motor
and what hole is supply and which is return (for the oil cooler from the case)
any help would be great
cheers aleks

THERE ARE SO many options that its hard to give really good advice the only thing i can say is have a look at the sponsers web sites like classic or vintage they have kits
i am using an external cooler on my volks rod thats is a bit extreme and it takes 3.75 liters to fill more oil moor cool using that supply point requirs a section removed from the fan shroud so the oil lines can come out
there are just as many options for where you tap into the motor i have a fitting like yours goes where the factory one was these cooler are very well made and they should be ok second hand
when i was running a supercharger on my 71 bus i was using a truck gearbox coolr and uused 2 liters on its own making a total of 5.5 liters
happy cooling

refit your standard cooler and it will be fine 😎

It's not good to remove the factory type 3 oil cooler as doing so you loose any cooling effect when the air speed is low through your new external cooler. Having said that, it doesn't matter which way you plumb it as the cooler wont have an specific in or out anyway, but I think you'll find the oil comes out of the rear most oil gallery. The way to do this would be to plumb a full flow oil system, that way you are filtering all the oil and this will extend the engine life considerably, then adding a cooler to this will further improve cooling without loosing the original cooler that works better than alot of people think. Adding a deep sump will also add volume and cooling surface area to the sump that will also aid in cooling. The full flow oil systems are quite difficult to fit to a type 3, but that is another story!
Personally I would first find out why it is running hot and fix THAT problem.
Good luck

thanks for all the comments. few helpful things there was the oil supply from the flywheel side or the pully side matberry?
the reason why i ask is if the oil supply hole is on the pulley side then if i run a oil line from the top of the cooler it will bypass the original cooler ( as ther will be a straight flow of oil from the original oill cooler inlet to the new oil cooler line)
i also plan on having a higher HP motor a bit down the line and want to get all this sort of stuff sorted now.
attached is a copy of the oil cooler i am running.
i want to run the external oil cooler line from where he has his oil sensor

Matberry you have hit the nail on the head!
what is a full flow system?
is that just a standard cooler?

A full flow system is one which all the oil from the oil pump is routed through pipe work out of the oil pump, through an oil cooler and maybe cooler and then back into the engine case supplying the main oil galleries as usual. The standard cooler only has some of the engine oil routed through it and so when plumbed to an external cooler, not as effective as full flow.
The oil feeds the cooler from the pulley side, where are you returning the oil after the cooler?
