Starting pulling out all the gauges - as the wife instructed and then she tells me that she does not want the tacho disconnected (I took out the oil pressure gauge, etc fitted into a hand made centre consol). Anyways, I have no idea how to hook it back up. I snipped here, cut there.... it is a Type R with 4 wires at the back, black, red, yellow and green. Can anyone give any clues?
Not sure how good the search function is on the forum as I put tacho in and only got one find.
Thanks in advance
John

easy
black is earth
red is 12volt igntion power- not live all the time, only when ignition is on
green is signal wire, it goes the neg terminal on the coil
and yellow is illumination, hook it to the parker circuit so it lights up when u put the lights on
or if u really wanna get tricky hook it to the speedo lights so it dims with the rheostat
altho some TypeR gauges use LEDs which dont dim properly. my old ones were
u can get nice gauge cups to mount them somewhere
oil pressure is a very sensible thing to have in a vw
by the time the idiot light comes on at 5psi or lower if ur hooting down the highway at 3000rpm the engine is already toast
Thanks Joel. The tacho is already mounted in the dash. I bought the bug for the wife a few months ago and it was all decked out. It has neons, big sound system, etc. Not really a look the wife liked but in pretty good nick.
Anyways, she wanted all the non chick stuff taken out. That is when I started cutting, clipping, removing, etc.....
All I really need to do to run the wire back to the coil and it should all be good.
One other thing....do you think to use the tacho is a good rough guide to adjust the engine idle? I have it set at 800 rpm by the gauge. Seemed to run OK.

ah yea that was the riced up red bug on ebay with the 300mph seats
i remember thinking the kid that owned that shoulda saved a vw and got a honda. sounds like its in the right hands now 👍
800 is spot on the money, if ur set abit to high generally first sign is pre igntioning when u shut it down
to low and it'll struggle to tick over if u have the wipers and lights on
Sweet as, got it working. Thanks for your help.
