i have just discovered that one of my web pages looks crap in IE7. Fine in firefox, fine in IE6. in IE7 the form fields go off the edge of the form. http://www.clubvw.org.au/supersprint/contact.php

Is it possible to have more than one version of explorer on my PC without it screwing up? If I install in 2 different directories?

Easiest way to do this is a duel boot system, with say windows 98 and windows XP or vista

or pickup a cheap crappy computer for $50 and have it loaded with another operation system on it.

Spend some time in Google with the search "duel boot computer"

AFAIK, no. IE is too tied with Windows to allow multiple copies to peacefully coexist.

You have a rather odd CSS problem, but you knew that.

Are you runnign window XP? if so there is a program that allows you to run ie 6 and 5 as stand alone
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/standalone
if your running vista they rebuilt the explorer code and you cant go back 😉

I have a dual boot computer. XP and XP64. XP64 never ever gets used because 3 or 4 years ago when I installed it I couldnt get the graphics to work properly so I dont bother. It is not really a solution anyway. I dont know how other people do websites but for me its very much trial and error, I dont use any tools other than textpad. I can make 2 or 3 changes in a minute. should I make it 300 pixels wide? try 250.. naah 275 meeeh 260 looks good. You cant keep swapping OS for that.

What a pain in the arse! I have discovered a workaround though. I can use firefox and IE6 here at home and I can remote connect to my work computer which has IE7. Not elegant, but it will do until my network admins see 1000 hits on clubvw.

Or I can just say if you dont have firefox you dont get a webpage :P

There is a much easier way, Microsoft offers a free program called Virtual PC. It allows you to multiple operating systems from within windows. You don't need to dual boot or anything. And the performance is fantastic on an average pc nowdays. But wait there is still more ....
Microsoft also offer downloads of virtual pc harddrive images, which have xp or vista installed, and a specific browser. They have IE 5,6,7 and 8. But the catch is that they only work for 3 months then expire, but you can always download them again.

I use these for work (I am a web developer) and I have no problems.

XP64 FTW. With correct drivers it is an awesomely stable OS.

VirtualPC is easier to setup, but you don't get the same level of control as VMware Server, and VMware can run anything from Windows 3.1 to all x64 OS's and virtually all Linux variants, with multi-core virtual CPU support. VirtualPC has some problems with x64 OS support, and can't dynamically adjust performance profiles once the virtual machine has been created.

A POSSE AD ESSE.

I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

I probably should confess that my version of XP64 was a free beta version, before the production release.... I guess that is quite relevant. 😏 At the time I either couldnt find a 64 bit driver from ati or I found one but it didnt fix the problem, I dont recall. I know I went looking though.

Hehehee - this'll upset a few people.

Here's my reccomendation

1 - Install linux - This is free (as in zero dollars) I personally recommend Ubuntu
2 - Install vmware server - Also free on the Linux platform (you have to pay for the other OS's)
3 - Install as many different OS's and browsers as you need (free if you have a copy I guess)
4 - Test away 🙂 - you can run all your OS's at the same time (might need more RAM if you've got an older machine)
4.5 - If you use php / mysql - install a LAMP stack and use Linux as your development platform. (guess what - also free).
5 - Perhaps even host your own site. (free + easy)
6 - Never have another virus (priceless)
7 - Never have another blue screen (calming)
8 - Be able to leave your computer on indefinitely without having to reboot due to some poorly written process hogging resources (liberating)
9 - Get free updates + support + and os that just 'works' and never have to pay again or replace your PC to run a bloated OS that does little more than look good.(really liberating)

I switched over to Linux years ago for web developing and have never looked back.

The Linux repositories have whatever software you need (yup you guessed it - for free). I even use it within a completely micro$oft environment - it talks to my M$ hosted exchange server (which I retained only to be able to host the push service for WM6 powered phones) I can read / write / edit office documents to communicate with my clients and I have migrated all of my software development to realbasic + eclipse platforms (yup you guessed it - both free).

Linux is not as polished looking as Winoze, but it is much more capable and is the perfect web developing environment.

And best of all

It's FREE

🙂

But if you don't want to take a trip the dark side you can simply install all versions of IE together - http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE

I used to use this when I developed on Windows - works great.

The interfaces are not so good but the rendering engine is the important part.

Has anyone used the Google browser Chrome? What are your thoughts?

I like it but it doesn't work with all websites which is annoying.

Cheers,

Guy

I have tested Chrome on a few company websites, it works well. Had a little trouble with ajax (when you click something on a page it, it loads without the whole page refreshing) but nothing major.

Works great for webpage styles and layout. You almost don't need to test any webpages on it if the pages work fine under firefox or safari.

But I am personally waiting for v2.0 to fix the various issues. (Plus I am very happy with firefox 😀)
