I have just purchased an original condition 1970 Beetle and find the bonnet release in the glove box very tight. I am worried about forcing it as I don,t wont to break anything- should I be concerned. Also wondering if anyone in WA or Perth area has seats off 1970 or pre 1970. I need to replace drivers seat especially - low back seats. Cheers and thanks Di

Hi

Disconnect the wire at the lock, hold the the plastic tube and wire end higher than the release lever, then dribble some oil down the tube overnight, hock it up again and you will have fingertip operation.

While its disconnected don't shut the bonnet, also while your at it hock up a spare pull cable under the front mudguard in case the cable breaks.

Hi
also grease the lock and the locking pin on the bonnet
best to use a non lithium grease or vaseline petroleum jelly
as You may [will] get the grease off the bonnet on Your clothes and Lithium grease doen't come off clothes... easily... if at all...

the bonnet cable is pulled against the nylon outer part of the cable in the glovebox..

One of the locals actually took the lever out of the glovebox and drilled a hole under the front of His beetle and had the cable come straight done thu the body and had a knob on the end of the cable...
it couldn't be seen normally...
and He had no problems opening his bonnet...

I'm lucky My 68 beetle has a rubber knob under the dash to open the bonnet..
I think the reason it was placed in the glovebox, was that the glovebox had a lock on it in the USA etc so You couldn't open the boot without unlocking the glovebox..

cheers
