I have an original condition 1970 1500cc Beetle and am wanting to put high back seats in. I am going to look at some 72 model highbacks. Will they fit in my 1970 Beetle without making changes.?
Later I want ot purchase a good conditon or even fair conditon drivers front seat for 1970 model so if I decide to show my car as an original - I can then take out 72 seats for that day and put original 1970s in . The 72 I believe is high back seats which I feel will be safer. Any one with any thoughts or do you know of where I can get a 1970 drivers seat . Does putting in the 72 seats sound a reasonable idea. Cheers and thanks to you all for a great forum to discuss and ask.

I think the runner are different .

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

The 1500 used the L shape runners and the superbug used a T shape.

ive fitted 72-74 highback seats with T runners on the pre 70 L runners before

they will fit but they're pretty loose and will rock around abit

you maybe able to improve this by using the plastic runner bushings that go with the T rail seats

another option that may be possible but ive never checked is to fit the backrests of the high backs to the lower parts of your original lowbacks
of coarse if theyre different coloured upholstry you will have mix match but the chances of finding highbacks in your colour are remote unless its a got a black interior

they will fit onto the original L shaped bases..
but they are wobbly and dangerous...
better to change the seat runners... to 1302S T type..
on 1971-72 superbugs...

cheers

Thankyou everyone for your advice- I so appreciate all your help. I found some high back 72 seats today in excellent condition still in the 72 model beetle and I am buying the whole car minus the engine for spares - so is it possible to take the seat and the runners out complete from the 72 and transfer them over to my 1970 Beetle.
I am a bit interested to in the idea of putting the top part of high back onto bottoms of my low backs - has anyone else done that?
Cheers and thanks again
Di

My 1970 1500 has highback seats with L runners. They are not wobbly and are very solid. I don't think the backs were changed as the vinyl is identical and appear to be original.
Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...
